The Con- Justina Elvira – Blog Tour

Release Day Banner.jpg

Jagger had three rules for every con:
1. Don’t back out
2. Don’t forget the story
3. Don’t fuck it up

I broke them all.

I first met Jagger when I was just nine years old. He was an older boy who gave me twenty dollars to buy a new pair of ballet shoes after I dropped mine in the mud. That’s when I fell in love with him.

And love would be my downfall.

I would run into Jagger over the years and I’d watch him as he’d hustle strangers out of their money with his latest scam. He lied, he cheated, and he took advantage of anyone he could. Most importantly, he never got caught.

Well, until he needed me to help him pull off his biggest con to date.

I thought I could do it. He told me it was easy to make money through deception, and I believed him because he had a lot of it.

But I should have known that nothing is guaranteed.

My name is Ronnie and now we’re on the run.

Jagger leans in close to me and I stop breathing as I focus on the way his body moves. I watch his lips as he takes in staggered breaths.
“Have you ever been kissed, twinkle toes?”
I let out a shaky breath. “No.”
Jagger’s palms graze my bare knees before placing his hands on each side of the bed so my thighs are trapped between them.
He leans in closer. “Do you want that to change? Do you want me to kiss you?”
I can’t speak. I can barely move, as the very thing I’ve dreamt about these past three years is finally about to come true. Jagger is asking me if I want him to kiss me. Somehow in my state of shock, as my blood begins to boil from anticipation and his lips proximity to mine, I’m able to nod my head yes.
He hovers above me as I look up into his eyes. His lips are just inches from mine. A million thoughts are racing through my head and I can’t seem to think straight. I want to remember every second of what’s about to happen, but instead, just as his lips are about to brush against mine, I whisper, “Why did Ky call you Ace?”
He grins down at me, his gaze flickering to my lips before he looks back up into my green eyes. “Because I’m good at everything.”
I don’t have time to process his answer. My eyes flutter closed as his lips connect with mine. I don’t move and my lips stay firmly closed as he kisses me. I feel hot… everywhere. My face is flushed, my lips are tingling and I don’t want this kiss to end.
Jagger pulls away slightly. One of his hands comes up to my face and he places a finger on my lower lip. “Loosen up, twinkle toes. Part your lips and just go with it. I want to see what you taste like.”
His finger slides away from my mouth and then his lips meet mine again. This time we move together, our lips fitting perfectly with each other. His kiss is soft and I feel his tongue graze my bottom lip before tracing my top lip. I open my mouth allowing his tongue to tangle with mine, and it’s everything I imagined it would be.
He doesn’t take it any further. The only parts of our bodies that touch are our mouths and when the kiss is over I know I’ll never be the same.
Jagger’s sparked something inside me that can only be tamed by him.
It was the best first kiss in the history of all first kisses and I know I’m going to crave more.

I’m spontaneous and took a chance on me, leaving an incredibly secure and prosperous job to write full-time…

I followed Ganz through a right maze of hallways that took us through the run-down building where Blake was being held. They’d refused to let him step foot anywhere else, they’d bent their rules for me enough as it was. When we reached the large and dirty room they were in, I stopped and looked through the glass on the door. Blake had his back to me as he sat at a large table in the far right corner of the room.

His shoulders were so tense you’d think he’d explode, and I could see how the Killers guarding him flinched every time Blake turned to stare at them. If my heart hadn’t been squeezed so tight, it would have been funny. I pushed the door open just in time to hear him threaten the nice Mongolians guarding him with some old Native American curses that would affect them and three future generations. I shook my head, thinking he’d never change. He did not believe in the Powhatan curses his tribe thought of as infallible, but he’d always play them against wolves who were naturally afraid of everything spiritual. It came with having a long collective memory and us being part of what was considered the impossible.

“Chibi-tan, stop threatening the good men,” I said, stopping in the middle of the room and dropping my bag on the floor, sending a puff of dust up into the stale air. He stood up so fast the chair flew from under him. When he turned, his eyes glassy and his breath heavy, my smile faded, making room for what was really in my heart. Fear, reluctance, and the joy of seeing my childhood friend.
“God damn, winggapo, you have to stop calling me that! You’re older only by a few months.”

I had used that term with him since the day I’d met him. He was scrawny as a four-year-old and a little shorter than me. He’d been brought to train with me and I’d been ahead of him in training and strength. I’d insisted he called me senpai. What started as a tease soon became an endearment, and he knew it, yet still insisted I’d stop. It was when he’d figured that out that he’d started to call me winggapo. Weirdly enough, although he was half Brazilian, he’d never used any Portuguese with me, only Powhatan words. I believed deep down he identified more with the Native American tribe of Virginia that his father belonged to than with his mother’s Brazilian roots.

Chibi tried to smile as well, but his grin seemed as unnatural as mine did. He pushed his hands deep into his pockets and looked past me. As there were only a couple of inches between us, I noticed his avoidance technique. His hazel eyes glowed bright green, showing his turmoil, before he finally decided to look me in the eye.

“I’m sorry, Shi. I’m so sorry I did not pick up.” He frowned and looked at his feet, his shoulders slumping. “I was on a vision quest, I didn’t know.”

I gasped loudly, taking one step to close the distance between us and wrap him into a tight hug. Of all the things I’d expected Blake would say to me, how his guilt took me by surprise I’ll never know. It was such an obvious reaction considering who he was, I mentally slapped myself for not figuring out sooner just how much he’d kept beating himself up over it. I’d thought our talk on the phone had been enough, but I should have known better. It would take Blake quite a bit to forgive himself.

“You said that, chibi. And I told you not to blame yourself. When the hell will you listen to your nii-san?”

“You’re not my fucking big brother, you’re my best friend,” he growled, his voice muffled by how hard he was hugging me back, his face pressed into my shoulder. He pushed me back and looked at me carefully. It felt as if he could see through me, right through the thin walls I’d used to build my appearance of a normal person. It all crumbled under his scrutiny, and by the time he pulled me back into his arms, I was already coming undone.

“Get me out of here, Blakey,” I whispered. “No one needs to see me having a freaking meltdown. Please!”

He nodded against the side of my neck, grabbed my hand and my duffle, and pulled me toward the door. I had to forcefully stop him to be able to say goodbye to Ganz. We hugged without a word for a few minutes; then he made me promise I’ll keep in touch. I noticed a few curt nods between him and Blake and somehow knew chibi-tan would keep him in the loop if I didn’t.

Blake then rushed me through the maze of hallways. Wolfs usually have a great sense of direction, but all I could tell was we hadn’t come this way when we’d entered the building. When Blake pushed a large door open and I saw his jet waiting for us, I realized I had good reason not to know where we were going. We raced to the stairs and promptly got in. When the door closed behind us, my legs finally gave out, but chibi caught me.

“I’m here, Shi, let it out.” His encouragement was all I needed. I let the pain and renewed rage out, messy and erratic. I could, now that my best friend was there to steady me through it. His pilot came in and asked us to sit down, but Blake merely growled. As we were still hugging in the middle of the jet, it started moving.

I didn’t know when or how I’d gotten onto the onboard couch, but Blake was holding me and my sobs had calmed down.

“Gods, I’ve never cried so much in my entire life as I have in the past few months. What the hell is wrong with me, chibi?”

“You had your heart ripped out of your chest and handed back to you in pieces, I assume,” he said, as if he was presenting facts to his Board.

“So word got out,” I growled.

“Well, chibi, the kids got dropped at your brother’s and never picked up for weeks, you disappeared, and then we found out you were in Siberian Killers territory. I think everyone figured out you’d had a breakdown and that you did not want your marriage to end.”

“Do they….” My voice trailed off before I could form the question. In all honestly, I was afraid of the answer.

“No, no one but me knows. They believe what Ganz told them, that you were randomly flashing and ended up out there.”

“Good.” I nodded, wiping dried tears off and blowing my nose into the tissues Blake had handed to me.

“Winggapo, I get why you did it and how your mind works. I swear though, you try that again, I’ll fucking kick your ass.” He pushed his index finger toward me, a menacing frown reinforcing his words.

“I promised I won’t, chibi. Ganz gave me an out, provided I really tried for two months.”

“He did what?” His voice was so loud, the flight attendant jumped out of her chair. Blake smiled apologetically before turning to face me, arching a brow and pushing his upper body closer.

“Yup, two months of trying, and if I still wanted to end it in battle, he’d have arranged it for me. I think he knew I would not want that anymore.”

“Smart wolf,” Blake said with a chuckle. “Then again, if this had turned out differently, he’d be a dead wolf.”

I laughed and shook my head. Ganz had been right, my friends would have gone after them had I been killed by their tribe. Maybe Shishou would have tried to stop them, but between Blake and Vicks, he would have failed. Thinking more about it, I figured Shishou would have joined just to keep his wife happy.

“He is an incredibly smart wolf, actually. I was surprised by him, in a good way.”

“Mhm, yeah, I caught the squeeze of his ass before we left,” he said, wiggling his eyebrows.

I tilted my head and smirked. “Yeah, I noticed how worried your pilot was I’d steal his fun. That was before he figured I was in full-blown sob-fest mode,” I added and winked. Blake shrugged casually. We’d never hidden our conquests from each other, it was pointless, especially since we used to share them more often than not.

Chalvaren Rising ~ Paula Millhouse ~ Character Interview with Magnus the Dragon.

Character Interview

Introduce yourself.  What book are you from? Are you the hero, heroine, villain?

My name is Magnus, and I am a sentient dragon from the Kingdom of Chalvaren. I flew into fiction first in Dragonstone, but I really earn my wings in the fantasy romance novel Chalvaren Rising by my author, Paula Millhouse.

Of course, I am the one they will call hero. Some Readers may think of Elf Prince Kort Elias as the hero of Chalvaren Rising, but I’m afraid that’s not so. My Mia, my rider, is definitely the heroine. She loves Kort, so I tolerate him.

How did you come to your author’s attention?

She has had this affinity for my kind, for dragons, since she was a child. Paula needed to write a fantasy romance where dragons are allies, keepers of the castle if you will, so I auditioned for the role. She keeps this idea in her heart that love is worth fighting for. I helped her get that notion of valiance across on the page.

Did you give your author a hard time when she was writing your story?

Of course, well, I do not exactly fit in to the wing of dragons on Chalvaren yet. I have eaten two people, and one of them was an elf. I did not know any better at the time. Because I have the gift of speech, like my sire Garnet the Red, the other dragons on Chalvaren give me a wide berth. And when I attacked Queen Elissabet for being mean to Mia that caused all sorts of problems.

What do you do for a living?

I fly with the wing of mighty dragons who protect the elves of Castle Elias in Chalvaren. I am still learning to get my landing maneuvers down – the ground is not my friend – but I am learning. We are like watch-dogs, but we fly, and every dragon has a unique weapon. I have not discovered mine yet, but I suppose our story will reveal all.

Who is the love of your life?

My rider, Mia Ansgar. She’s more than a mother figure, she’s my imprinted rider. She saved my life, and helped Kort return me to the Kingdom of Chalvaren. I would willingly give my last claw to see my Mia happy.

What was the first thing you noticed about him/her?

Mia is beauty incarnate, with long tresses of golden hair, and pointed elven ears. She’s the guardian of the Dragonstone, an ancient artifact nonpareil, and she’s protecting it for me. When I reach maturity I am destined to use the fist-sized amethyst to unite the dragons of Chalvaren. I noticed her courage first.

What’s your greatest fear?

In Chalvaren Rising, my greatest fear is that Isa Ansgar, an embittered wizard and the last of Mia’s kin will kill her and enslave me to serve her lover Malachai. This simply cannot happen, I tell you, and I will give my life before I let the witch win.

What’s your motto in life?

Love is worth fighting for. That concept drew me to my author.

How do the other characters in your book view you?

I am afraid they find me odd and threatening. As the one and only Spirit Dragon, an Aurora Class Dragon, I have an affinity for magic. I suspect the elves and dragons in my book are afraid of me.

What do you think reader will find interesting about you?

That Mia and I share an affinity for magic, but of course, the Readers will most likely find it interesting that I cannot roar yet. I try, but all that comes out are embarrassing croaks. They will probably find it humorous that I have trouble landing. Kort is terrified I might break Mia’s neck before I perfect the skill, and he yells about it a lot.

What is the kinkiest thing you’ve ever done?

I have not learned to do kinky things yet, but because I can read I suppose I could learn. I’ll check King Lachlan’s Library for sacred texts, and get back to you when I grow up.

Will we be seeing you in future books?

Absolutely. My author thinks a Christmas story is on the horizon, and we are working on what happens next after the climax in Chalvaren Rising.

 What makes you happy?

Eating fresh fish on the seashore below Castle Elias. Flying with the wing of mighty dragons who protect the Elves of the Kingdom of Chalvaren. Watching and learning from my sire, Garnet the Red, the castle’s resident Fire Dragon.

What makes you mad?

Wizards who use magic for anything that does not sustain life. Everyone is given certain gifts that can and should be used for good. I think humans call that nastiness hatred and bullying. When they corrupt that sort of valiant magic and use it to hurt others, that seriously ruffles my last scale.

Chalvaren Rising_FINALKeynote (blurb):

With the love of Kort, Chalvaren’s warrior-prince heir, Mia Ansgar will seize her birthright and become the great dragon-riding wizardess prophesied to free that elven kingdom from her embittered sorceress kin.

Her mouth opened beneath his and her arm hooked around his neck. She relaxed into him. The kiss was soft and deep. Arousal didn’t burst into flame, but lured them both to explore. He followed the call. He pulled back, but leaned close for another fleeting kiss. He wanted to see and touch.

One of his hands swept up her side, tracing the curve of her waist even through the sturdy clothing she wore. Her hand clenched briefly on his uniform shirt, but slid over down his chest. She slipped her fingers between the buttons and discovered his undershirt. She moaned, frustrated.

He knew a good idea when he saw it. He unfastened her shirt, letting it fall apart to reveal the pink bra she wore underneath. His mouth watered. He wanted to lean in and trace the edges of that pretty bra with his lips and tongue. Tease her until she begged for him to take her breast into his mouth.

He trailed his fingers along the path he wanted lick. Even through the fabric, he could see her nipples tightening into hard peaks. His cock hardened even more, the ache pushing him to drive her wild. Her chest lifted and he glanced up to find her eyes locked on him.

“I want your mouth there.” Her hand tightened in his hair. She tried to tug him to where she wanted him.

He leaned down and trailed his mouth over the curve of her breast. His tongue licked over the lace and teased the skin. The light salty taste filled his mouth, luring him to explore. As he approached the valley between her breasts, he used his teeth to add an extra layer of sensation.

He traced a single finger around the nipple shielded by pretty silk. She moaned and tried to turn so he’d take it into his mouth.

From Me to You Friday- It’s My Birthday- Well Almost

Hi all! Yesterday was my birthday. Not a big one, that was last year. This year I am humbly 51. To quote a line from My Big Fat Greek Wedding “How you get so old?”

What did I do to celebrate? Not much. Last weekend my DH bought me The Longest Ride. I’d been wanting to see it since it was in theaters and regardless of what critics and others said, I loved it. I made Spinach/feta pasta and we had a family dinner. That was it.

My DD#2 had to leave for Memphis on my birthday for her new job. I’m sad to see her leave, but so happy for her to start her new career. She will be teaching art at the Memphis School of Excellence.

So, now onto the fun stuff! I have a wonderful present to share with y’all for my birthday! I am privileged to be part of a Military box set called No Heart Left Behind, and the cover reveal is here!
