Review – The Bear Project by Doris O’Connor

bearprojectWhen Animal conservationist Emmi Layne meets bad boy Cole Jackson there is no denying the instant lust between them. She has a thing for bears, after all. However, you cannot build a relationship on awesome sex alone, especially when you live on different continents, and have nothing in common.

Everything changes when Emmi discovers that their night of passion has left her with more than erotic memories. She has no means of contacting him, even if she wanted to, but she hasn’t counted on this bear shifter’s determination.

Cole is not what he seems, and he will stop at nothing to claim what’s his—even if that means breaking all the rules. Can he trust the mating bond to deliver, or will it spell the end of an ancient blood line? With the odds stacked against them, can this unlikely duo find happiness together?

Cara’s Review

Well, here I am stuck in a quandary.  The Bear Project, the second book in the Projects series, tells the tale of Emmi Layne and Cole Jackson who meet after Emmi’s tour bus takes off without her.  As a bear shifter, Cole immediately recognizes his mate, and wastes no time in her seduction.  From a purely erotic perspective, this book is a hot, sizzling, smoking five.  Hands down.

However, I had a few issues with the storyline.  For example, time moves oddly- there is one scene where Emmi is talking to a friend, and then two sentences later, she is consoling said friend who was crying after having some sort of altercation in the yard.  What? When was there time for that to happen?   I was also unsure of some of the “rules” around shifters- it seemed at some points that humans knew about shifters, and then didn’t in others.  Either way, Emmi handled the news that Cole was a shifter without even a blink.

So, for the rating?  As I said, the erotic/sex portion of the story is super-hot, a definite five.  I had some issues from the story itself, and would give it a 3/5 rating.  So, do I average them?  I’m not sure, but based on the fact that I am intrigued by the series, and want to read the first one (The Orgasm Project …sounds like fun!) and can’t wait to read Maria’s story (hopefully it will be out soon) I decided a 4/5 was in order.  After all, how many books do a good job of making you interested in reading the other characters stories as well?

I’d recommend this novel to those of us who love hot alpha shifter male loving.  You know who you are.

We won’t shy away from tales of Lifestyle love or poly themes but we do have some additional guidelines. For BDSM, no hardcore BDSM acts may be portrayed, the Lifestyle itself contains plenty of mental aspects along with physical things and we’d like to see that reflected in your stories. This does not mean put the whips away; it just means no brutality or kink for kink sake. We’re less concerned with the number of partners and more concerned with story dynamics, plot, and great characterization. If your triad has a fourth, fine as long as it makes sense and adheres to our guidelines.

Of course, don’t forget the sizzling sensuality. Capture the passion between the characters for all levels of the novel, not just the sex.

We accept completed manuscripts of 50,000 words up to 120,000 words.

What we will under no circumstances publish:

NO BESTIALITY (shifters in paranormal/sci-fi/fantasy don’t count)
NO RAPE (Consensual Non Consent had better be very well written and clear.)
NO NECROPHILIA (Undead doesn’t count)

Sending in your manuscript:

If your manuscript is complete and as polished as you can make it, and you think it’s a good match for Ardent Books, we’d like to hear from you. We accept queries for completed manuscripts only. Please do not submit a work in progress. Due to the large number of submissions we receive, your best opportunity for acceptance is to carefully read and follow all submission guidelines. We use this criteria as evidence of your professionalism and will delete unread any submission that does not follow these guidelines.

All initial submissions should be electronic. Please do not send us original materials or artwork as we will not return any materials to you.

It may take up to thirty days to receive a decision in the form of either a request for more information along with the complete manuscript, or a letter stating that we have not found a match with your work at this time.

Your query email must include:

The publishing industry has changed drastically over the past decade and because of these changes, authors must now carry the responsibilities of marketing, promotions and publicity for their books. This is a daunting task, and many authors fail, losing their publishing contract or possibly any future contracts. It’s a hard, cold fact … an author’s books must sell and sell well for the publishing machine to keep moving.

Understanding these challenges, Assent Publishing has taken special efforts to offer success tools for our authors. The Assent Academy was developed specifically for Assent Publishing authors.

clip_image006Patricia D. Eddy has been a writer all of her life. She used to sit at her parents’ kitchen counter at an Apple IIe typing out short stories. She even wrote a few on their old typewriter. But it wasn’t until NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in 2011 that she ever came close to finishing a story she started.

Once that dam broke, the flood waters never receded. Patricia sits down to write every evening after dinner and quite often sees midnight come and go before she heads to bed. She doesn’t sleep much. But she wouldn’t have it any other way.

In her spare (HA!) time she runs, bikes, swims, yogas, pilates-es, reads, and is terribly addicted to Doctor Who and Sherlock. Apparently she has a thing for quirky British men.

From me to you Friday ~ Beverly

Are you as happy as I am that it’s Friday? I’d be happier if I didn’t have to work tomorrow, but oh well, such is life!

Here’s a couple of little snippets of my current WIP, Willow’s Cry.
Remember it’s a rough draft and hasn’t even been in front of any of my beta readers. I’ve already fixed a missing word error and there may be more! Just remember the final draft will be much better!

Patting the oak a last time, Alex headed to the willow tree. He sighed, the weeping willow tree. Slowing, he examined it. One of the branches from the oak had hit it, splitting the trunk of the young tree. Alex didn’t know that it would survive. As Alex approached, a young woman raised her head, tears running down her cheeks.
“Alexander.” The weeping stopped momentarily.

“Willow?” Alex swallowed. Willow threw herself in his arms once again weeping. He tightened his arms around her, pulling her in to comfort her. She was beautiful, her hair as golden as the flowers that flowed down her branches in spring. Her skin was smooth and slick as her branches, eyes the color of her leaves. Alex had no doubt that she was the spirit of the dying tree.

“What am I going to do?” His shoulder was damp from her tears.

“Willow.” Alex leaned and scooped her up, cradling her in his arms. “Let’s see what the damage is.”

“It’s bad.” Willow gazed at him, eyes red and swollen, face wet from her tears. Her voice was husky, raspy from her crying. “I’m going to die.” She put her arms around his neck looking for comfort. Tears still ran down her face. “I don’t want to die.”

Alex watched Willow kneel back down and start pushing the dirt down and under the exposed roots of the oak tree. He swallowed. Heart or not, another part of his anatomy wanted to lead, right down towards the curves wiggling back and forth in front of him.

“Are you going to dump the mud?” Willow’s inquiry had Alex starting. He could feel his ears burn, embarrassed at being caught staring.

“Yes.” Alex dumped the earth close where Willow indicated. “Stay here I’ll get more.” Alex shook his head as he headed back to fill the pail. Willow affected him like no other woman had. He wondered if it was because of his paternity, that he just had a stronger reaction to a wood nymph. Maybe any nymph would turn him on like this.

Alex glanced up. He swore he heard a chuckle waft through the air around him. Spying no one around, he put the shovel down and grabbed the bucket to head back to Willow. Alex swallowed a groan. Willow was ass up and head down under the tree. Alex could imagine Willow placed in front of him like that, naked ass glistening, breasts hanging free to his touch as he was smothered inside her wet warms depths.

Nope, he was pretty sure it was this nymph that had him reacting. Unfortunately her innocence and hesitancy stopped him from taking it as far as he wanted. He’d have to let her take the lead. Alex grinned. He saw no reason he couldn’t try to persuade her.

No time like the present. Alex had no problem with a little mud. Stepping between Willow’s knees, Alex stopped so that his legs were pressing against Willow forcing her to stay spread as she kneeled there.
“Alex?” Willow’s voice sounded a bit breathless.

“What are you doing?”

If you enjoyed these snippets make sure you check out Lightning Strike, where you meet Alex’s cousin Levi and the Laurel tree nymph Daphnaie.

Beverly’s Review:
Joszi  gave me an all new insight into the psyche of Sascha Illyvich, or at least to his enjoyment of certain vices!

Joszi was a selfish werewolf. Unwilling to live up to his destiny, he ran away leaving his mates Ilona and Lukina vulnerable to the Alpha. Though he went back and checked on them without letting them know, he was unable to see the abuse they suffered because he had deserted the pack.

Selfish and obnoxious, Joszi was an enthralling character. The combination of Joszi, Ilona and Lukina was dynamic and fascinating. Sascha tells an enthralling tale in this menage tale of werewolves and destiny.

From Sabella –

Although I tried to avert my gaze, I couldn’t bring myself to look away from his beautiful eyes. They pulled me in from the chaos like a lifeline. In the dark blue sea of endless comfort, I was calm and at peace. The last two days of confusion and the whirlwind of emotions were all settled in his eyes.

From The CEO’s Wife-

Blair paused just outside the door to Evan’s office, her heart hammering in her chest. Just on the other side was her husband—her very rich, powerful, sexy husband. When had she become intimidated by him? When had the thought of initiating sex with him become something to worry over as opposed to something fun and sensual?

When she realized she might lose him, that’s when. And now, it seemed like everything depended on what she did next. She needed to prove to Evan that she still wanted him, that she would do whatever it took to save their drowning marriage. She swallowed past the ball of nerves lodged in her throat and placed her hand on the knob. His secretary had told her that Evan was alone in there and had no more meetings until after lunch. Now was her window of opportunity. Yesterday, he’d gone into a hotel with another woman. A slip up she was willing to forgive him for just this once. After she rocked his world, of course. Remind him who he chose, she told herself for the millionth time. Don’t let him get away.

She turned the knob and squared her shoulders, remembering her practiced seduction as she strode into the room, locking the door behind her. Determination kept her chin high and her expression sultry. Confidence swung her hips as she sauntered across the large office. Evan, who had been having a heated conversation on the phone, dropped the handset. Mouth hanging open, he stood. His eyes were wide as they took in her short, blunt blonde bob, fully made up face, black trench coat, and knee-high leather black boots. The heels clicked across the tiles as she came in front of his desk, pausing to strike a pose; legs spread, one hand on her hip.

“Blair?” He smiled. “What have you done to yourself?”

Blair caressed the strands of her bob and smiled. “It’s not what I’ve done to me,” she purred, “it’s more about what I’m going to do to you.”

Evan’s grin widened as he fumbled for the dropped phone. “Carl? Let me call you back.”

Without waiting for a response, he dropped the phone into the cradle and rounded the desk. Blair stopped him before he could grab her with a hand on the middle of his chest. She needed to maintain control of the situation and couldn’t afford to let him touch her just yet. Those hands of his had always driven her wild.

She grasped his silk, blue and grey striped tie and yanked, pulling him behind her toward the desk. He followed happily, his hard body brushing up against hers.

“I don’t know what’s gotten into you, but I like it,” he murmured as she turned him, pushing him to sit on the edge of his desk. He reached behind him, shoving papers and files out of the way and obediently perching on the large piece of furniture.

“I seem to remember you always wanted to have sex in here,” she said as she reached for the belt holding her coat together. When Evan was newly promoted to CEO, he’d wanted to celebrate by taking her in the office, but Blair had refused. She’d been worried that someone would catch them, hear them, think she was trashy for doing it. Now she didn’t give a damn what anyone thought. If Evan wanted sex in his office then he was going to get it. From her. “I take it that’s still a fantasy of yours?”

Blair snatched her coat open, revealing the corset, thong, and stockings beneath. They were black and trimmed in red, Evan’s favorite color. His lower lip disappeared between his teeth at the sight, zeroing in on her breasts—which were displayed gloriously in the cups of the corset top.

“Hell yes.”

From My Beloved, Marie –

I reached down and squeezed the water from the washcloth. “Please don’t, Jacob. I don’t look pretty anymore,” she sobbed. Reaching out, I slowly turned her around, her eyes trying to escape mine. Gently, I washed her arms, and then dipped the cloth in the warm water.

“You will always be beautiful to me, my love. Even weak and underfed, you still take my breath away,” I replied softly.

“How can you say that? Look at me!” She was angry, and I could understand why.

“I am, my love, and I always will. I understand your anger and why you believe you don’t look pretty. But I didn’t marry you because of your looks. I married you because you were the bravest girl I have ever met.” I leaned in and kissed her stomach. “I married you because of those beautiful blue eyes filled with mischief.” I kissed her hip, and smiled as goose bumps broke out under my kiss. “I married you because of your stubborn nature, knowing that you would give me a good fight one day.” She laughed a little, and I kissed her other hip. Slowly, pulling her down on to my lap, I reached for her face and made her look at me. “I married you because you stole my heart the moment you looked at me. Yes, I see your body now as it is, but I also know that with my love and attention, you will be healthy again.” I kissed her on her mouth softly.

From Dinner Break – A More than Magic Series short story

I sighed and opened my eyes.

“I can’t,” I admitted. “I can’t think about anything other than that stupid rec center.” I tried, and failed again, to dislodge him and get up.

“Mm. Not good enough. You know, you’ve been here since eight, right? It’s almost eleven. You’ve been working on that crap for fifteen hours.”

“Jesus,” I groaned. “Has it really been that long?”

“See why I’m forcing you to relax?”

I sighed and leaned forward, until my forehead was resting against his. His skin was almost too cold, but I welcomed the discomfort. It gave me something else to think about. He draped his arms over my shoulders in a loose hug. His fingers ran down my back, rubbing in small circles, until they stopped on a painful knot. I closed my eyes, while he worked at it, and we just sat like that for a few minutes. By the time his skin had warmed up to my temperature, he had worked the knot out and found another. I leaned into his hand, feeling more comfortable and relaxed than I had in days.

“You were right. I needed a break,” I whispered.

Danio chuckled. “I know.”

He moved his hand up my back and pressed his fingers against the taut muscles in my neck. A headache I’d had for hours started to mercifully recede. I opened my eyes and found his dark blue ones looking back at me. They were swirling with a mesmerizing blend of blues; a water elemental trait that I had never expected to be able to decode. But now, every shade and ripple was as clear to me as the flaring reds and flickering orange eyes of a fire elemental. His eyes were splashing with merry, relaxed shades of blue. Yet, I could see a telltale trickle of gray, just ebbing and flowing on the edges of his irises. He was still worried about me.

I tilted my head, just a little, leaned forward, and kissed him.

clip_image016Elizabeth Kirke wanted to be an author before she even knew what an author was. She used to say that she wanted to be an artist, but that was only because she was too young to write and had to tell stories with pictures instead. She hasn’t stopped writing since she learned how. It wasn’t long before she dreamed of becoming an author and couldn’t be happier now that that dream is a reality.
If she isn’t writing…well, let’s be honest; if she isn’t writing she’s probably on Facebook thinking that she should start writing. But, if she isn’t writing or on Facebook, she’s probably doing something involving books, baking, gardening, or yarn.
Like most slightly-nosy, avid readers, Elizabeth can’t resist trying to catch a peek at books she sees people reading when out in public to see if she can figure out what it is. While doing just that one day, she realized that it would probably be the coolest-thing-ever if she caught a complete stranger reading one of her books. That’s her new dream.

clip_image020Windy City writer Elizabeth Marx brings cosmopolitan flair to her fiction, which is a blend of romance and fast-paced Chicago living with a sprinkle of magical realism. In her past incarnation she was an interior designer—not a decorator—which basically means she has a piece of paper to prove that she knows how to match and measure things and can miraculously make mundane pieces of furniture appear to be masterpieces. Elizabeth says being an interior designer is one part shrink, one part marriage counselor and one part artist, skills eerily similar to those employed in writing.

Elizabeth grew up in Illinois and has also lived in Texas and Florida. If she’s not pounding her head against the wall trying to get the words just right, you can find her at a softball field out in the boonies or sitting in the bleachers by a basketball court. Elizabeth resides with her husband, girls, and two cats who’ve spelled everyone into believing they’re really dogs.

Elizabeth has traveled extensively, but still says there’s no town like Chi-Town.

Jenna Pizzi is the bestselling author of the NA Destined series, as well as her romantic standalones Sweet Serendipity and Chance Encounters, and her romantic suspense The Long Road Home. She lives in Massachusetts with her children, her lazy old dog, and three cats that adopted her as their pet. When she is not writing, she loves spending time walking the beach, collecting rocks with her children, or exploring the deep dark woods of New England. When the muse calls and there is a heartstring to pull, you’ll find Jenna creating a world that will touch many lives.

I curse as soon as I see Elizabeth sitting in the waiting room. She obviously misunderstood my rule: never show up at my office. She’s a beautiful woman with jet black hair, olive skin, surgically enhanced breasts. I curse myself for the growing hard on I have to deal with now. “What are you doing here?” I asked as I stroll past her without looking back. I walked around my desk and sit in the big brown leather chair. I power up my laptop and go about my day without saying another word to her. Suddenly, I hear her clear her throat from across the room. As I glance up from my desk, I find her standing in my office with nothing but a red lace thong and matching bra, which barely covers her nipples. This has to be a dream! I blink several times to be sure that it’s not. How the fuck did she do that without me seeing her? I never missed a half naked woman…ever!

I try to swallow the huge lump in my throat and then look to the side to ensure the door was closed before sauntering over to her. I don’t care why she’s here, but I’m glad that she is.

“Well, Well, What did I do to deserve this?” I say as I wrap my palm around the back of her neck and lean in with our lips almost touching. Her breath paused when she gazed into my eyes, and that sent a surge of desire straight to my cock. “I believe I asked you a question, miss.” I say it a little harsher than I mean to, but she knew the rules before we ever hooked up.

She bit her lip and hesitated a moment longer before finally speaking. “Well, I wanted to bring you lunch today…”

I watch as she reaches behind her back and unhooks her bra, letting it fall to the ground. My cock strains against my slacks, begging to be released. I see no reason for more questions; that would come later. Right now there were more pressing items on my agenda. I grasp her upper arms and push her against the wall, causing a loud thud to ring through the room. For a moment, I’m worried that I’d hurt her, but when she moans loudly against my mouth I remember Elizabeth liked rough sex. I’m okay with that; I don’t do gentle. There was only one person I’ve ever done gentle with, and that was when I slept with Emma last night. Why am I thinking about Cassie when I have a beautiful woman standing in front of me right now? I slide my hand into her hair and pull hard enough to give myself full access to her neck. I kissed a trail from her jaw line, over her bare shoulder before stopping at her firm breasts.  A low rumble escaped from my throat before taking her pink nipple in my mouth, flicking it with my tongue, and biting the pink pebble, causing her to writhe against me. As I slowly trail my hands down her sides, I grab her hips and lift her to align our bodies and grind into her. I hook my thumb in the small elastic band of her thong and rip it from her body. Our kisses are frantic by now, and our bodies are damp with sweat. I slide a finger into her slick folds, earning a gasp from her pink lips. I slide in and out of her body and circle her clit with my thumb. I can feel her body clamping down on my fingers. I continue to slide my fingers in and out of her body, faster and faster, and just as her release rushed from her body. As her orgasm neared its end, I pinched her clit hard, which causes her body to shudder. I reach into my back pocket for a condom and rip the foil with my teeth. I quickly roll it down my length.

I’m so close that I almost came just from rolling the condom on. I don’t give her body time to adjust as I pound into her, hard and deep; in and out at a frantic pace as if I can’t get enough. I went faster and faster until my climax rushed through me like a wave in the ocean with my cock filling the condom with my warm release.

I rest my forehead against hers while I look into her passion hazed eyes, and it suddenly hit me like a ton of bricks…What did I just do? I just had sex in my office with a woman who broke the rules. I can’t believe I let my guard down. What’s happening to me?  Since when did I not abide by my own fucking rules?

“You need to leave,” I say tersely. I know I’m being an ass, but it is time to deal with the consequences. She stared at me in disbelief. Then she opened her mouth to say something, but quickly closed it.

I know my client will be arriving soon. How can I explain this?  How can I tell one of my wealthiest clients that I just had a quickie in my office?

I place my hands on the wall on either side of her body, caging her in and closing

the space only mere inches from her face. “You need to leave now. Don’t come

back. Don’t call. Do you understand the rules now?”

My name is Regina Frame and I live in Alabama with my husband and three dogs. I’ve always had a love for animals and I work with charities to help raise money for homeless pets. I’ve been known to carry food in my car and stop on the street to feed an animal. I recently rescued a severely abused dog after trying for two months with no success. He now lives with me and my husband and he is happy and healthy today.

I’m an avid reader of romance and erotica novels, and recently released my own. Saving Chloe is part one of a trilogy which was released September seventeenth. Parker’s Past is book two, which was released Nov. 30, 2013. The final book “Family Secrets” will be released early 2014. Thank you for your support, it means the world to me.
