New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery welcomes readers back to Fool’s Gold, where a one-time fling could become the real thing…

Felicia Swift never dreamed she’d hear a deep, sexy voice from her past in tiny Fool’s Gold, California. The last time Gideon Boylan whispered in her ear was half a world away…on the morning after the hottest night of her life. Her freaky smarts have limited her close friendships, and romance, but she came to Fool’s Gold looking for ordinary. Gorgeous, brooding Gideon is anything but that.

Black Ops taught Gideon that love could be deadly. Now he pretends to fit in while keeping everyone at arm’s length. Felicia wants more than he can give-a home, family, love-but she has a lot to learn about men…and Gideon needs to be the man to teach her.

As they struggle to stay away from each other, secrets will be revealed, tempers will flare, and hearts will be broken.
Welcome to Briarcrest Academy…where sometimes, the best things in life are Very Bad Things.

Unedited excerpt from Very Bad Things:
I checked my teeth in the mirror. I practiced my fake smile. I practiced it again and again. I counted forty-three seconds in my head.

“Nora, quit primping and say something! Anything, dammit,” he demanded, straightening up from the door and stepping closer to me.

Falling for someone can be a lot like playing roulette. You don’t know what will happen when you place that bet, but you take a deep breath anyway and put all the chips out there. And when the ball spins around and around, you pray it lands on your number. Probability says you’ll likely loose, and in this game of love with Leo, odds were I would lose, too, but I had to try.

I stared at him through the mirror and said, “We shared a tiny moment that was…something rare. The first time I saw you, the whole world just vanished except for me and you. I don’t think everyone gets a moment like that, but we did. If I could, I’d freeze that moment and relive it over and over again. I need more moments like that because life isn’t about the big moments, like when you graduate from college or get that job you’ve been wanting. It’s the small moments that take your breath away, like when you first see your newborn’s face or…when you meet someone who could be your soulmate.”

“What are you saying?” he whispered.

I turned to face him, trembling, as I said the rest, “I shouldn’t have painted your car. I shouldn’t have stripped. I shouldn’t have gotten trashed. And, I shouldn’t have assumed you wanted me back. So yeah, maybe I am a mess, but I do know one thing for certain…I want more little moments like we had that day. I’m greedy for them. I want those extraordinary moments over and over… and…I’m not going to get them from you am I?”

Leo’s face was white, and to me that was his answer.

He was my Prince Charming, but I wasn’t his Cinderella.

Review – Afterburn – Tara Chevrestt

Afterburn 453x680

Crystal is an enlisted mechanic with a tragic past. Grant is an officer and a pilot with a broken heart. When faced with a difficult decision, will Crystal choose wisely or lose the best thing that ever happened to her?

The love between them burns hot, but their relationship won’t stay fueled if they can’t beat the obstacles in their way. Besides breaking the fraternization rules, Grant and Crystal have the difference of race between them…but can they prove to the rest of the world, and to each other, that love is color blind?

Afterburn is about overcoming one’s past, not judging others, learning to forgive, and what it’s like to be a woman in a “man’s world.”

Tamara’s Review

Hearts 3Flames 3

I liked Afterburn, but I felt the story was a little rushed. There is a lot of back story included in the beginning and I really enjoyed that part of the novel. But once, Grant and Crystal meet, too much happened too fast for me.
These character have a lot of issues to deal with: Racial issues, grant is black and Crystal is white. Military, Officer/enlisted. History, Crystal’s father was a pilot killed in a plane crash. Add to this Crystal is being sexually harassed at work, and yet all of these conflicts are resolved in a two week period.
I felt that if Afterburn had been a full length novel or even a longer novella, I would have enjoyed it more. That being said, it was still an enjoyable read.
The main characters are likeable and I was really pulling for them to get their happily ever after. And, as in previous books I have read by Tara, the descriptions are beautiful, and the love scenes are very sensual without being graphic at all. He love scenes make me sigh, ahh sigh.
If you like multicultural romance and are looking for a quick read give Afterburn a try.

Reviews You Say? They love to Read! Meet our Reviewers

I am Cara Davidson from New Jersey.

I can not remember a time in my life when reading was not an important and defining characteristic of mine. I devour books by the hundreds, love escaping into stories of other worlds, true love, and wondrous discovery. When not reading, I can be found helping out with animal rescues, ghost hunting, traveling, oh, and working as a Registered Nurse in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. I am also currently working on my Masters in Nursing Education, and look forward to teaching the next generation of nurses.

There is no genre of book that I haven’t at least tried 🙂

My name is Crystal Newman. I have been living in Inwood, Iowa for 18 months now, I am from Virginia. I have been married for fifteen years and have four kids. I love to read and that is my passion in life. I read romance and these are the different kinds that I read: erotica, paranormal, ménage, and historicals. I write reviews for several sites and I post my reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, and sometimes Allromance. I also beta read for several authors and I am on many street teams. If it wasn’t for authors I wouldn’t have anything to read so I try to get their names out there. My favorite authors are Laurann Donher, Sam Crescent, and Christine Feehan just to name a few. If there is anything else you would like to know just ask.

I love reading and writing, its been my life since before I can even remember and now its something that I am pursuing as a career.

I hate reviews under a 3 simply because just because I feel like if I didn’t like it didn’t necessarily mean it was a bad book it just wasn’t for me and being on street teams I know that even 3’s can hurt an author! I guess growing up in the South mama and grandma always said If you can’t say anything Nice don’t say anything at all so I try to find something positive about every book!

This was another excellent book by Susan Mallery! I have absolutely fallen in love with the Fool’s Gold Series! This particular book was Patience and Justice’s Story! Patience fell in love with Justice when she was 14 and he was 16 but Justice had to leave with his Uncle suddenly in the middle of the night without explanation! Patience ended up getting pregnant and married at 18 to the wrong man only to have him leave her and her new baby, so she moves in with her mother who has MS! Justice shows years later looking to start a business in Fool’s Gold with an explanation nobody would of expected as to why he had to leave so suddenly! Patience and Justice find that the chemistry between them is even stronger than it was when they were teenagers but can they fight their own demons to be together! I absolutely loved this book and would highly recommend it! I can’t wait for the next one in the series!

Kicking and screaming my way here! LOL! I adore reading. I can’t think of a more wonderful thing to do with my spare time. I reviewed for a year and a half with sizzling hot books and loved it! There is such a wonderful world of authors out there with their own unique twist on life. I still review on occasion on goodreads and amazon, else where also upon request. I have an account at B&N also, though I’ve yet to post there.

I won’t be doing reviews a lot as writing and SSLY and my day job keep me pretty busy, but I will be doing some. You can check out my reviews on goodreads.

I read a huge variety of books and contrary to what I write and our blog I read just about anything that’s fiction. I love Scifi, YA (though I’ve read some that I really really wish I hadn’t!), westerns (I devoured Louis L’Amour when I was in high school and still look for a violent series called Edge-anyone recognize that one?) steampunk and dystopia. I adore end of the world novels-and I have no idea what category those are! Besides awesome of course!

We are looking to add more reviewers as no matter how awesome these ladies are we don’t want to burn them out! And really everyone deserves a vacation once and a while!

Enjoy and check out our new Facebook offering SSLY the reading room!

Review: Knight of Darkness by Lisa Mooney

As a voracious reader, it is not often that I come across something that hasn’t been done, but I was pleasantly surprised here. Ms. Mooney takes the standard story of love and adventure, and displays it in a new and wonderful environment. Add a strong heroine (cause hey, who wouldn’t be screaming?) and a hero you fall in love with for who he is, not his appearance, disgusting aliens, talking swords, stir, and voila! You get a fantastic sci-fi romance novel.

This introduction into the Surge Knights world depicts a race of peoples who are devoted to protecting other planets from the U’Nar, an evil (gross) alien race that exist only to destroy. The Surge Knights are seeded on different planets, undergoing a 100 day metamorphosis to become full Knights, the hope being that the transformation will be complete prior to any invasion started. The remarkably naïve race destroys the invasive force, then return home. Of course, we humans love to throw a kink in things, point out all sort of inconsistencies, and have learned lessons from all the horror movies we’ve seen.

Rachel and Sorrow break all the rules and taboos to find love in one another arms. You’ll be thrilled reading this book. You’ll also be excited to know that it Ms. Mooney has several other books available…I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.

Warning: there is some graphic violence in this book in relation to the alien invasion.

From Me to You Friday – Tamara- Do you Love Me?

Can I entice you to read my books?

This is the Excerpt I was going to read at RAGT.

While her nephew snored in the bed next to her, Carrie pulled out her Kindle for a little escapism. Some werewolves and vampires sounded good about now. Definitely no cowboys!
Just as she was getting to the climax of the story there was a knock at the door.
It was a cool night, dressed in long flannel pajamas and her fluffy robe around her, she guessed that was acceptable enough to answer the door. It had to be someone from the hotel anyway, no one else knew she was here, except her family and they were back home in Tennessee.
Walking to the door, she looked through the peephole. Damn, damn and double damn! It was Chance. How the hell had he found her here? And what the hell did he want? She so didn’t need this right now. Maybe she could ignore him and he’d go away. Just as that thought crossed her mind, he knocked again, harder. If she didn’t answer the door, he’d wake Tyler, and that was the last thing she needed.
Unlatching the chain and pulling the door open, she blocked the doorway with her body to prevent Chance from trying to enter, “Well, what an unpleasant surprise.” Carrie drawled, “What are you doing here?”
“I told you I wanted to talk,” he said
“And I told you there was nothing to talk about.”
“Oh, but I think there is, aren’t you going to invite me in?”
“No, Tyler is sleeping. If you insist we talk we can do it outside. Wait a minute while I get my key card.” With that she shut the door in his face.
Opening it a moment later, hands stuffed into her pockets she nodded towards a smoking bench set a few yards away.
“We can sit there and I’ll still be close for Tyler. What is it that’s so important?”
“Well, it appears you just hit the nail on the head. Tyler is what I want to talk about. Is the boy mine?”
“You must have hit your head the last time your horse threw you. Tyler is my nephew. I would never have had your child and not told you. Although it would have been a little hard, since you never returned my calls. But I’m pretty sure when daddy showed up at your door with a shot gun you’d have gotten the message! Is that what this is all about? You seriously thought Tyler was my son?”
“Well, the timing did seem to fit,” Chance stuttered
“Yeah and douche that you were, you would have never known, right? Well, you can rest easy. You didn’t leave anything behind that night, except my broken heart.” Damn why did I say that! Why not just give him all the power? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
“Tyler isn’t the only reason I came.” Bringing a hand to her cheek he said, “I wanted to see you again. I’ve missed you.”
Knocking his hand away, she stood up.
“Oh, please. Spare me the phony come on lines. What, is it a slow night on the circuit and you figured why not tap a sure thing? I don’t think so, not interested. Go find some other woman to rope and ride. See you around cowboy.”
She turned to go back to her motel room, but Chance grabbed her arm and tugged, pulling her towards him and rising to his feet. He pulled her into his arms and kissed her. Hard. For just a moment she was too stunned to respond. They still had chemistry, but hell, no, not going there.
She placed both hands on his chest and pushed, then she slapped him across the face. She stared for a moment at his shocked face seeing the red imprint of her hand bloom across his cheek, she turned and fled.
Once safely back inside her hotel room Carrie leaned her back against the door, breathing hard. Oh my God, I slapped him. A small giggle escaped her lips. Uh oh, maybe I’m hysterical. No, the look on his face had been so funny. Did he really think to kiss me into submission? That shit might work in romance novels, but not on me. If he wants to kiss me he’ll have to earn that privilege again. And that won’t be easy. But…it was a nice kiss. Ha, I’m so screwed. There’s no way to avoid him for the rest of the show. I wonder if he’s still roping, if so, we’ll probably be seeing him in the heading and heeling events tomorrow. I will absolutely not let him get to me again. I will not let my heart get broken again, certainly not by the same man. I’ll just do my best to keep him at a distance. Make sure Tyler is always around. Yeah, that will work.

Do you prefer a military romance? How about

Chapter One

Charlie’s heart dropped into her stomach. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, then she read the letter again.
Dear Evan, It was a pleasure meeting you on October 4. I would like to schedule a meeting with you and your family to further discuss the career opportunities available to you through military service. The 101st Airborne Division here at Ft. Campbell appears to be a perfect fit for your goal to become a pilot. Please contact my office at 615-555-9981 to make an appointment.
Jameson Hunter, CWO, SF, US Army
Oh no, this was not happening. Not Evan, not her baby. She’d already lost so much, when that drunk driver had taken her husband, Phillip. Evan had only been twelve years old at the time. She wouldn’t lose Evan too. But there Evan sat at the kitchen table, wide grin on his handsome face, waiting for her reaction. So, Charlie plastered on a smile and turned to face her son.
* * *
Charlie pulled her Sonata into the parking space directly in front of the US Army recruiting office. Her hands were sweating, but she pasted a smile on her face and turned to face Evan.
“We’re here,” she said.
“Duh, Ma. What’s your problem?” Evan looked at her, eyebrow raised in question.
“Nothing, just a little nervous I guess. Men in uniform intimidate me.”
“Yeah, right, nothing intimidates you, Ma. You’re the most fearless person I know,” said Evan.
Charlie smiled; glad that her son thought so highly of her, even if his perception wasn’t entirely accurate. She wiped her damp hands on her jeans and reached to open the car door.
The recruiting office was in a typical strip mall. The window displayed the image of a soldier in fatigues and the army slogan “Be all you can Be. In the ARMY!” Taking a deep breath, Charlie pushed the office door open. The office sported two desks, some filing cabinets, a water cooler and uncomfortable-looking molded plastic chairs. The walls were basic white, the decorating scheme consisted of recruiting posters and a framed letter from the president. Obviously, appointed for function, rather than comfort or style, it was about what she had expected. What she wasn’t prepared for was the man sitting behind the desk.
Oh, my. Shoulders a mile wide, dark hair, with just a touch of gray at the temples, sun-bronzed skin over sharp features and eyes so green they practically glowed in his handsome face. Rising to his feet, the personification of Ares extended his hand.
“Warrant Officer Jamison Hunter.” When he spoke, the deep baritone of his voice sent tiny shivers down Charlie’s spine. What the hell was this? This was definitely not the time or place for her long dormant libido to decide to wake up. Pull yourself together girl! This is the man that wants to take Evan away. Remember, he is the enemy.
“Charlotte Mackenzie, Charlie. And I believe you know my son Evan.”
“Pleasure to meet you, ma’am. Please have a seat.”
