Review- The Last Woman on Earth by S.M. Shade

lastwoman

When Abby, a former librarian meets Airen, a devastatingly handsome former model and actor in a darkened department store, romance is the last thing on her mind.A plague has decimated the population and left Abby on her own to raise her son in a world without electricity, clean water, or medical care. Her only priority is survival.

Traumatized by the horror of the past months, and grieving for the deaths of their loved ones, Abby and Airen become a source of comfort for one another.

Damaged by her past and convinced that Airen is way out of her league, Abby is determined to keep their relationship completely platonic. However, Airen is a hard man to resist, especially when he steps in and risks his life to save hers.
When a man named Joseph falls unconscious in their yard, and Abby nurses him back to health, everything changes.

How does love differ in this new post apocalyptic world? Can three unlikely friends survive long enough to find their place in it?

Cara’s Review
I am a very fast reader. In fact, I can finish most books in an hour or two. I read this book in one sitting, no breaks, then immediately restarted reading it. I have never done that with a book before. Ever.

This book is straight up gold. I might be slightly biased because of my love of post-apocalypse books, but it is absolutely, brilliantly written book. It offers an amazing contrast to survival between two groups, fanaticism versus love- two possible roads to the future, only one of which will last.

The characters of this book are amazing and complex….they form a family unit built on strength and love. None of them have a perfect background, some worse than others, but together they have the strength to heal. Airen, Abby, and Joseph are the perfect parents, and their love for one another shines brilliantly from the pages. Each child is unique, bringing different aspects to the community, and aspects for the future.

Abby believes herself to be an ugly, bad person. An individual who never really thought it mattered whether she lived or died. As a single mom, she suddenly finds herself and her son seemingly lone survivors from a plague that destroyed humanity. This story tells the tale of the strangers she comes across, some stay and grow her family, and others just pass through- but leave indelible marks on the small community. Abraham is another survivor, a self-assured man, believing that he performs God’s work in this new world. He makes himself a leader of men, and the cruelty and psychotic methods he uses to do so are such a striking contrast to the love of Abby’s world. I cannot stress enough how important it is to read this book. It is absolutely amazing. It will have you smiling, crying, frustrated, and laughing. If there was a rating beyond five stars, I would award it to this novel. I look forward to reading more of Shade’s work. I hope this is a glimpse of things to come!
