Beverly and Tamara: Welcome to SSLY. Thanks so much for joining us today. So first why don’t you tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a mom and a wife. I’m sometimes a nurse, but just enough to stay in practice, and I write books.

Tamara: What do you HAVE to have when you are writing?

My computer.

Beverly: When did you start to write?

Thirty-something years ago… Seriously. I always had stories in my head. I wrote my first one in fourth grade. Another one in seventh and I haven’t stopped since.

Tamara: What do you think are the qualities that make up a “hero”?

Somebody with a code of honor, somebody who takes care of those he loves, somebody who stands for something, somebody who makes time for the people in his life who matter.

Beverly: Can you describe your favorite character? And which of your books is he/she in? How do you come up with your characters?

Kit Colbana, the heroine of my UF, is one my favorites. She’s mouthy and an smart-ass, and she’s vulnerable, but too stubborn to give up. She’s a fighter. I like that. I don’t know if I come up with my characters so much as I discover them. They just sorta…happen.

Tamara: What are the hardest scenes for you to write? Suspense? Sex? Dialogue? And why?

That changes with every book.

Beverly: What writer, if any, influenced how you write?

I learn something from a lot of writers. Nora Roberts was the one who seduced me into romance, so she’s probably one influence. I cut my teeth on Mercedes Lackey and I always look for that kind of solid world-building when I’m reading anything even a little bit out of the ordinary.

Tamara: Who would you choose as your “book boyfriend”? From what book? Author?

Ummm… I don’t think I’d pick any of them. Too many of them come with baggage I just don’t want. One guy that appeals the most is Bluebell…ah, Illium, by Nalini Singh, but again… the baggage. I like simple.

Tamara: What are your favorite types of heroines? Do you like the damsel in distress who needs saving or the kick-ass variety? Why?

Someone with strength. It doesn’t have to be the kick-ass type of strength. A woman who struggles to take care of two kids on a single parent salary is definitely strong. Even a woman who walks away from an abusive husband after five years has a core of strength that some people will probably never understand. I want to read about strong women, whether they’ve always been strong or are learning to be.

Beverly: What was your worst date ever?

LOL… I married my high school sweetheart. I didn’t have bad dates.

Tamara: If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want to have with you? (you have food, water, shelter, all the necessities, so nothing mundane)

Is sunscreen included? I burn like crazy.
A spare pair of glasses because I’d break mine for sure if I was stranded somewhere. And probably an extra inhaler. Then my writing bag, cuz it’s always full of the stuff I need to keep me occupied.

Beverly: What is your “guilty pleasure”?

I don’t have many. If I feel guilty doing it, I’m not going to enjoy it much. I am slowly discovering the pleasures of bourbon—and I like Kentucky bourbon over anything else—but I wouldn’t call that a guilty pleasure.

Tamara: What dream or goal have you yet to realize?

I find new ones all the time so I can’t really say.

Beverly: What was you most embarrassing moment?

Ummm. I dunno. I frequently trip or fall down, so I can’t pick one of those. Maybe when I gushed over Nora Roberts the first time I met her.

Tamara: If you were a color what would you be and why?

Orange. Cuz it’s goofy.

Beverly: Who has influenced how you perceive love?

Probably the preacher at my church.

Tamara and Beverly: Okay. We are SSLY so I have to ask. Who loves you?

My mom. My husband. My kids. My brothers. Some friends at church, some friends online. I know, without a doubt, come what may, if I asked them for a favor, they’d be there. If I messed up, and messed up bad, they’d be there.

I like dark and handsome… my husband is an Alaskan native so I’m sort of prejudiced that way.

Broken Blade Excerpt:

Damon.
My heart raced. It had been three weeks since I’d seen him. It seemed like longer. But it wasn’t long enough. I couldn’t—
The door opened. My hand convulsed on the water and the plastic crumpled. Lowering my gaze, I stared at the water and sighed. Dumping it in the recycler, I dried my hands off. I was surprised to see they weren’t shaking. That was nice, I thought. At least I could face him without showing how much of a mess I was.
He’d know, of course.
Damon always knew.
My heart bumped against my ribs as I turned around and saw him standing in the door. His hair had grown out longer than I’d ever seen it, maybe even close to an inch all over. Eyes the color of thunderheads stared at me as I stood there. A muscle pulsed in his jaw.
The silence was weighted, a heavy burden settling on my shoulders as I fought the urge to back away. Run. Hide.
Nearly a month had passed since he’d barreled his way through the wards at TJ’s. An eternity seemed to stretch out between us, words hung unspoken, the pain in my heart, in my soul, so vivid and all consuming, it all but doubled me over.
Doyle was the one to shatter it. “Kit needs some information on somebody in the Clan.”
Damon shot me a look and then focused on Doyle. “What for?”
“Work.”
Damon looked back at me, taking in the gun, the K-bar strapped to my thigh and although he didn’t say anything, I suspected he was fully aware of the fact that I was pretty much loaded for bear. His gaze dropped to my belt—at least that was what I figured he was looking at, although some part of me, the part that wasn’t instinctively cowering in fear, felt a warm, shivery little tingle spark, then spread. I rested my hand on my belt and stroked the silver wire of the garrote, needing something to ground myself.
“You looking to kill one of my cats, kitten?”
