Review- The Rose and the Dragon by Toni V Sweeney

roseanddragon
Nanny wanted: Must have desire for excitement, adventure, danger. When Miranda Wilson is hired to care for Dominic Andrus’ triplets, she has no idea how dangerous the job would be! It is like the plot of a Gothic novel: lovely, young governess, handsome, mysterious employer, three motherless children… but there the resemblance ends. Even when she learns that her boss is an interplanetary criminal, hiding his children on Earth to prevent their abduction, she manages to take it all in stride… until she meets Kit, Dominic’s volatile younger brother, and realizes he is the man she will love forever. Miranda soon finds herself on the planet Gataeus, risking her life in a war between the Andruses and a madman sworn to destroy them. For whoever wins the war will determine not only whether she ever sees Earth again, but also the survival of her young charges and the fate of the man she loves.

Cara’s Review
A perfect job becomes available for a nanny, candidates not interested in adventure, excitement, and aliens need not apply. Wow! What a wild ride. This novel was a great read, delivered on that want ad, and so much more.

Miranda, the heroine of our story, is incredibly adaptable…she doesn’t even freak out (too much) when she realizes her employers aren’t from Greece, but from another planet. Okay, maybe she’s a bit slow on the uptake, but how many of us would really expect our bosses to be an alien (though I have wondered about some). This book is an awesome combo of genres with everything you could wish for: a strong heroine, great heroes, a well fleshed out alien culture and history, neat sci-fi gadgets, and romance. Sweeney does a great job of explaining and introducing things without getting the reader bogged down in details.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this will be the start of a series, and that we will see much more of this cast of characters in the future. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for something slightly different from the norm, someone like Miranda, who the “desire for, and ability to accept, excitement, adventure, and danger.”
