Kiss Me Dead

One curse . . .

Christian, a nineteen-year-old reaper-human hybrid enslaved to the Other World to harvest souls, earns his freedom by making a bargain with the Goddess of Death. As part of the bargain, he’s been cursed with the kiss of death.

One kiss . . .

The only way Christian can break his curse is for an angel to kiss him. Willingly. He finds Brooke, a nineteen-year-old descendant of a Naphil whose destiny is to hunt rogue reapers, suffocating in a semi-agoraphobic cocoon since witnessing a reaper steal her brother’s soul.

Two destinies . . .

Christian has found the angel who can break his curse, and the seduction begins. To break her phobia’s hold, Brooke embraces her angelic role and makes it her mission to kill rogue reapers to avenge her brother’s murder. Christian can break his curse by kissing Brooke dead . . . but will she figure out his game and kill him first?

“I asked if you were scared.” His gaze was intent, focused, and he held very still as if the fate of the future rested on her answer.
Her heart squeezed out several, annoyed thumps. She crossed her arms over her chest. “A little.”
One corner of his mouth lifted in a satisfied smile, like a cat that had just gobbled up a bowl of cream in front of a panting dog. “I see,” he said and stretched his legs.
She decided she didn’t like that smile, because it made her think he knew things about her, things he couldn’t possibly know. Holding completely still, like prey hiding from a predator, she debated whether to ignore him or shove him off the bench or just bolt for her car. “Whatever.”
“Are you alone?”
She squeezed her eyes shut, intending to not answer, but then whispered, “Yes.”
Damn, damn, damn!
She glared at him. A trio of panting girls dressed in tank tops and barely-there shorts—apparently they thought it was July, not April—hiked past them, twisting their heads to ogle the guy. He smiled as he eyed their asses, then ran his tongue over his upper lip. Her throat constricted. Were the girls safe around him?
Running was no longer an option. Even though her heart slammed and her palms itched and her teeth ground with the urge to hide behind the nearest tree, she had to stay and figure out what the hell he was because she was the only one able to detect demons.
Fear won out. Someone else would have to save the day. She spun to head back down the trail.
“Wait,” he said.
She turned but, unable to quite face him, her gaze slipped to the woods. “What the hell do you want?”
“Why do you want to leave?”
Because you might be a freak. Because you might be a demon. Because you scare the hell out of me.
She finally settled on the most innocent truth. “Because I don’t know you.”
“We can fix that. I’d like to get to know you.”
“Too bad, because I don’t want to know you.”
He waved a finger between them. “You don’t think this is nice? Talking?”
“Hell no.”
“Come on, doll, don’t be like that,” he said in what he probably thought was a charming, can’t-say-no tone, and rose from the bench.
“Back off.”
“Wow. Bitch much?”
Could he feel the angry heat blasting from her gaze? “Only with tools. Look, I don’t know what you are, but … ”
The gray in his eyes brightened. “Don’t you mean who?”
“No. I said back off. I mean it.” Her stomach sizzled as though a cigarette had been jammed into her belly button.
His tone lowered to basement-level proportions. “And what exactly do you think I am?”
Brooke was too fevered and dizzy to even try to evade the question. She whispered, “A reaper … sort of.” She couldn’t seem to stop her mouth. “You don’t look exactly like them, but you’re some kind of reaper hybrid, aren’t you? A demon wanna-be. A freak … ”
He stepped toward her, fury unfurling in the force of his glare, and the silver in his eyes flashed. Literally flashed, like sparks.
She backpedaled, her eyes bugging and mouth gaping as her mind gelled in a silent scream.

Dale Ibitz

About the Author-
Dale Ibitz was born in Connecticut, grew up in the state of Washington, and then re-located back to Connecticut as an adult, where she studied English at Central Connecticut State University. Always a lover of books, she spent much of her childhood reading, visiting the library (her best friend’s mother was a librarian), and writing. In sixth grade, she placed 3rd in a writing contest, and she’s never stopped.
Dale’s a fan of hiking and the outdoors, seriously good writing, and she never, ever starts the day without chocolate and coffee (preferably together). Music inspires her, and she likes to listen to alternative metal.

If you were to visit Dale’s house, you’d meet her husband, 2 kids, their dog Lea (most people simply refer to her as The Beast…and for good reason), their cat Luna (affectionately known as Loony Luna), and a couple of loud-beaked parakeets.
