Excerpt:
Pondering the information, he ascended the hotel’s steps in time with him. What could have possibly happened between Jason and Samantha?
His friend must have sensed his attention. He turned and looked at Basil as he opened the door. “I’ll tell you everything once we have privacy.”
“Did it end horribly?”
Shaking his head, Jason followed him into the lobby. “No, I expected it would be worse if she ever found out what I am, but she was eerily calm about it.”
Basil led him up to his room. Closing the door behind them, he asked, “What happened, Jason?”
“Samantha has always known I’m bisexual,” he began. “But she never knew anything about me being a natural lycanthrope.”
“Why didn’t you tell her before you got married?”
“We only loved one another as friends. She married me to shut my family up about settling down, and so her mother would leave her alone about grandchildren. Samantha’s only stipulation for our marriage was she wanted a career first and children later.”
“How’d she find out about your lineage?”
“My mother.” Jason sat on the edge of the bed. “Mom thought Samantha already knew about our family. Samantha mentioned her mother had asked when we planned to start a family, and then Mom blurted something about wanting grandchildren so our natural werewolf gene could be passed on before I grew too old to sire offspring. Samantha freaked.”
“She could handle a marriage of convenience.” Basil summed up the story. “And she’s fine with you being bisexual, but she couldn’t deal with having a lycanthrope husband or children?”
“No, and trust me, I understand her reasons, but I think our farce marriage became too much for her. After she calmed down, she announced she wanted a divorce, but not because of me and my lycanthrope family.”
He frowned. “Then why?”
“You.”

Beverly’s Review:
Basil is looking for love. The man he wants he can’t have so he signs up with Madame Eve for a 1Night Stand. He needs to try to get Jason out of his system and move on with his life. He is thrilled that the date will take place at The Desert Patch Steampunk Getaway. It is a steampunk resort catering to people with his affliction. He has wanted to go there for years but the waiting list seems to be never ending.
I was really excited to see this was going to combine two of my favorite items, werewolves and steampunk. This was a different take on werewolves and I enjoyed the information. I like the different twist it takes. I was disappointed in the steampunk aspect as it was given a minor nod by explaining the fountain and the costumes at the saloon. It was not really central to the story at all. As enthusiastic as Basil was about the steampunk aspect, I really expected more.
The villain was entertaining in an evil sort of way. And I have to admit, I like my villains evil! Love how the title of the book was worked into the story.
I did like the characters but didn’t really like Jason. Or perhaps I should say I didn’t really understand him. I enjoyed the love story between Basil and Jason. I’m not a big fan of adultery in any form, so knowing Jason was married but getting divorced is at least palatable. But he seemed to leave Basil hanging even though Basil didn’t know it and accepted what Jason told him when he turned up as his companion for the weekend. I could see him not getting involved romantically as he was married but I thought he should have helped him out with the werewolf thing before when they were just friends.
Basil seemed to be a sensitive sort, a little clueless maybe and I enjoyed his personality. He seemed like a wonderful man.
If you are a fan of the quick 1Night Stand series you will like the love scenes with Basil and Jason, they are hot! But if you are looking for more of a steampunk tale, this is not for you.
