Bachelor in the Boondocks

Bachelor in the Boondocks
by River Ames
Genre: Clean Contemporary Romance
Jared Sherman has been coerced into spending six months of his life in the
small Missouri town of Green River. His uncle wants to merge their
businesses, but before the older man will talk business, he’s made
it a pre-condition of the agreement that his nephew move to Green River.
Jared, a big city sophisticate, is having trouble wrapping his mind around
country living. He feels as if he’s traded in his life in the fast
line for a sojourn straight out of a rerun of the “Andy Griffith” show.
Except, Jared doesn’t remember an episode that had Sheriff Andy standing in
the buff with only a flimsy pair of frilly curtains preserving what’s
left of his dignity while being surrounded by the broken glass of his
bedroom window.
Cue Amelia Greene.
Call 911, and I’ll break your arm.”
She can understand him not wanting anyone else to see him in this bizarre
situation, but his tone is unacceptable.
Being the good neighbor that she is, and because it was her younger brother
whose baseball smashed through Jared’s window, Amelia helps Jared
free himself from the shards of glass essentially holding him hostage.
Jared Sherman is a man who’s counting the hours until he can escape the
confines of country living. Another countdown is underway, however.
He’s counting down the next time he can steal another sweet kiss from a
woman who’s so devious he can’t figure out how she manages to be
so darned seductive. Maybe by wearing her flaming hair in a bun,
going about in long-sleeve blouses, and forgoing expensive perfumes,
she’s discovered a sure-fired way to entice even the most
dyed-in-the-wool bachelor.
Who would have ever thought the natural look could inflame a man’s
desires?
Good grief, she was literally the girl next door.
But, he was a man who had no intention of living in the boondocks, minus
the docks.
River Ames spent the first eighteen years of her life in Southern
California. Here is a partial list of some of the cities in which she
lived: Pasadena, South Pasadena, Duarte, El Monte, Arcadia La Puente,
Lomita, West Covina, Pacifica, Santa Monica, Palmdale, and Hacienda
Heights. In some of those cities, she lived at six different
addresses. In the city of La Puente, River’s family lived in four
different houses on the same street. The non-glamorous reason for all
the moves was habitual eviction necessitated for non-payment of rent.
It was an interesting way to grow up.
River attended twenty-six different elementary schools, two different
junior high schools and four different high schools. In one
elementary school, she was a student for only three days.
Perhaps, because she was so frequently identified as the “new girl,”
the pattern of River being an observer instead of a participant in
the interactions going on around her seemed a logical fit for her
personality.
When she was thirteen, River read “Gone with the Wind.” She
skipped three days of school in order to finish the book in one
sitting. Disappointed in Rhett for “not giving a damn,”
River wrote her own sequel–in long hand, on three-hole punch,
notebook paper. The opening line? “Tomorrow dawned bright and
fair.” In less than fifty pages, Scarlett had been transformed
into Jane Eyre and Rhett had fallen in love with her all over again.
After Southern California, River has spent the next part of her life living
in the semi-rural town of Idaho Falls, Idaho. She is a graduate of
Idaho State University, majoring in Health Education Sciences and
Addiction Counseling. She’s worked the past ten years at a Behavioral
Health Center where she assisted children, teenagers, and adults
committed in a 24/7 secured facility because of mental health
challenges they are experiencing.
River’s books celebrate the good-natured humor that lays at the heart of most
of our human predicaments. The conflicts are significant, yet it is
her characters and their quirky (yet somehow universally relatable)
thoughts, words, and choices that reflect a light-hearted peek into a
world we wish was real. The amazing thing is that these worlds are
real to readers for the time they visit there.
Readers have said: “In a River Ames book, one minute I’m laughing out
loud, and the next I have a lump in my throat.”
River is currently readying a historical novel, “Gideon’s Justice.”
This three-part novel is Book I in a three volume western series set
in the Colorado Territory.

Innocence ~ Character Interview ~ Holly J. Gill

Good Morning. Please introduce yourself.  What book are you from? Are you the hero, heroine, villain?

Hello there and thank you so kindly for having me visiting you today. My name is Calvin Edwards I am from the Innocence series I’m the hero and heroine, due to having this series written from both myself and Kacey Richards.

How did you come to your author’s attention?

It was my parents hall, land and the river that brought Holly’s attention to me, due to her using the exact same location for another book and loved the hall so much she wished to use it in another book. And also Holly became compelled to a song that filled her imagination and helped create such a powerful story, Return To Innocence by Enigma.

Did you give your author a hard time when she was writing your story?

No, no, I would never do that (chuckles). No honestly, I think once reader start reading the series they will see I am nothing but a kind hearted man who…well let’s say turned up in the wrong place at the wrong time…even I never saw what was coming!

What do you do for a living?

I work with my father running the families Real Estate Company based up and down England. I am actually based in London, running the establishment, the company basically buys properties do them up to the highest standard and sell.

Who is the love of your life?

Oh gosh, this is a very difficult questions for my as my heart has only ever belonged to one woman, and now…well she’s back in my life, only it’s not as simple as telling her how I feel it’s more about being there for her and making sure she stays safe.

What do you want more than anything?

To love someone who will love me back, without seeing the luxuries in my life.

What’s your greatest fear?

Not being there for Kacey!

What’s your motto in life?

Don’t take anything for granted, because one day it will come bite you on the bum.

How do the other characters in your book view you?

Sincere, dedicated, passionate, but I also have my very professional side due to my line of work.

What do you think reader will find interesting about you?

My strength to stay and help Kacey through her troubled times. I know I was a fool for not calling the police when I managed to finally get her of the bridge, but I honestly saw a young woman who was distraught and needed someone to care and offer her help.

What is the kinkiest thing you’ve ever done?

Saved Kacey. Saved her unborn baby. Made sure she had somewhere for the first time in years she had somewhere safe, warm and clean to stay. The stories she told me broke my heart.

Will we be seeing you in future books?

Yes, three more Innocence of Love, Breaking Innocence and Return To Innocence.

What makes you happy?

Seeing Kacey smile, that is priceless!

What makes you mad?

Wow, this is a tough questions, right now I have a few matters that make me mad I won’t mention them all but firstly I do not tolerate bullying, that really gets me mad, and I will resolve the issues. However, one person who makes me mad and I struggle to be anywhere near is Rosalind Kacey’s mum, I resent the fact she wasn’t there for Kacey when she most needed her.

Do you think you and Kacey will get together?

I have no idea. I like her. I like her a lot, but we have many issues we need to untangle and get through before we could even consider walking down that road.

What is your current state of mind?

Mixed up, I have no idea which direction to head, as either way would be wrong!

If you could do anything in the world right now what would you do?

Turn the clock back!

About the Author

Connie L. Smith spends far too much time with her mind wandering in fictional places. She reads too much, likes to bake, and might forever be sad that she doesn’t have fairy wings. And that she can’t swing dance. Her music of choice is severely outdated, and as an adult she’s kind of obsessed with Power Rangers. She has her BA from Northern Kentucky University in Speech Communication and History (she doesn’t totally get the connection either), and is currently working on her MA.

On the Road with SCP, The Promise, Susan Owen Davies

Children of Annwn : The Promise book blurb.Mia Childs is a stranger to herself, happy to hide in the background because of
her terrifying visions. At night, she dreams of Annwn where she meets an outrageous flirt called Ryder and a sense of belonging invades. However, when Mia’s dreams become reality in the shape of a newcomer at school who’s identical to the one in her dreams, her reality crumbles.
Ryder’s touch awakens her memories revealing that she is a child of Annwn, a guardian of her magical realm and the mortals. She learns that it was her visions of dwindling pregnancies causing the end of humanity and Annwn, which led her to evoke an ancient law, The Promise, which tests the power of their love and magic as a way to gain entry into the human world.
Now, Mia must embrace her fears in order to fulfill her promise and save humanity because Greyson, a Darkshadow has been
manipulating events from the beginning and the fate of everyone she loves lies in her hands
Excerpt One

Ryder
watched her with weary frustration. His gaze washed over her waif-like features as she stood with shoulders back, proud, and beautiful, yet unaware of how she appeared to the world.
Innocent. Shy. Provocative.
Such an alluring mix, and she was his, even if she didn’t realize that yet. He knew that she wasn’t as unaffected by his presence as she retended. Even now, he could hear her heart beating thunderously. It wasn’t just fear that made it soar. Her eyes flared with attraction toward him.  Watching that, Ryder almost reached out to her, again. Only, he knew it would be a huge mistake.
Too public. Too many prying eyes.
Her silky hair flew around her shoulders as she turned away, leaving him to stare at her long auburn tresses, and he imagined his fingers entwined in her locks. To ignore him was playing with fire. Ryder pushed his thoughts into her reluctant mind, willing her to listen to him and turn around, but he came up against an impenetrable wall. She was deliberately ignoring him, which made him smile. Maybe it wouldn’t be so hard after all. In time, she would accept him—because after all, they were the same. Until then, if she insisted on goading him with these silly games, he was going to give her a reminder of who she was.The dance hall was overflowing with teenagers striking poses and dancing to the music. Alex stood next to Mia, dressed in a blue plaid shirt and dark jeans. He whispered into her ear, and she nodded. Smiling, he lifted
her hand, and led her into a sea of dancers.
Ryder wasn’t going to stand idly by and let this human interfered with Mia. The music changed to a slow beat, and Ryder forced the
image of them holding each other out of his head. He concentrated his thoughts on Mia, manipulating his fire elements to send a blazing heat directly into the  palms of her hands.
Excerpt Two
The wind picked up pace and whistled through the trees. It was getting cold now. A shiver ran over her,
but she didn’t want to move or speak.
“Here, put this on, you’re freezing. We should go. Enough for one night,” Ryder said.
Her heart was still floating up in the night sky, overcome with all that she had learned. How could
anything be normal, ever again? Her life and all that she had known had changed. She looked into his eyes and started crying.
“Mia, it’s okay. After the rush, as you said, there’s the fall, the doubt. I know there’s more you
want to know, but it can wait,” he said.
“You were right after all,” she added.
“About what?” he cocked his head.
“I do know you,” she said, as her hands entwined in his hair, and she pulled his head towards her face.
“Mia,” he groaned.
She kissed him.
Ryder devoured her mouth, kissing her as if starved of oxygen, and she was fresh air. A rush of
sensations took her breath away. The air crackled with electricity, and she
clung to him, desperate for his touch, unwilling to let go. He held her face
and brushed his thumb against her jaw. Breathing came in small gasps. Her hands
brushed against the hem of his T-shirt, and as she touched his warm skin
underneath, a searing heat shot through her whole body, down to her toes. Mia’s
hands roamed across his back, and as their bodies touched, they lifted off the
ground and levitated.
Raindrops fell around them like misty drizzle. Neither of them stirred until the drops increased in
size, drenching them. Only then did they become aware of their surroundings and drift back to the ground. Clasping hands, they ran laughing wildly toward the motorbike.
They clambered on and drove, laughing, through the soft rain. They were just pulling up at Mia’s house when the rain eased, as if somehow timed just for that purpose.

Excerpt:
I was alone,
surrounded by cold black walls. They stretched on forever in both directions,
like a never-ending hallway. I shivered and wrapped my arms around myself.
That’s when I noticed my bare arms. I looked down at the flowing, white,
nightgown I wore and didn’t remember putting on. My feet were bare on the cold
stone floor.
“Hello? Is anyone
there?”
There was no answer. I
peered into the blackness in front of me. Where was I?
Something moved just
ahead.
“Hello? Who are you?”
Suddenly light flooded
the hall about ten feet in front of me. A triangle of light from an open door
was like a beacon in this strange place. I felt my feet move toward it of their
own volition, like they knew what was behind that door. My breath hitched as I
moved closer to the light. What would I find in there?
Half afraid to open it
the rest of the way for what I would find, I placed a hand on the cold wood. I
had to look. Had to see. What if it was my only way out? I took a deep breath
and pushed.
An elaborate bedroom
greeted me. A fire burned in the grate and an enormous bed stood along the far
wall. It was covered in a velvet comforter and dozens of pillows. The floor was
covered in plush-looking, blood red carpet. The room was warm. So warm and
inviting compared to the cold emptiness of the hallway outside. I stepped in
before I could think of an excuse not to.
The door slammed shut
behind me. I whirled around and tried to reopen it, but it was no use. The door
was gone. I watched what was left of the knob melt into the wall, leaving behind
unbroken dark wooden paneling.
“Hello, Penelope, my
dear,” a deep voice oozed behind me. “I have been waiting for you a long time.”
I turned slowly to
face the man who hadn’t been there moments before. He was seated in one of the
chairs before the fire, swirling a dark red liquid in a crystal glass. He was
beautiful in a cold way. Blonde hair picked up the reds of the blazing fire and
his eyes flashed an arctic blue. His black button-down shirt showed off his
broad shoulders. He looked to be around Julius’ age, in his mid-thirties.
Despite his angelic looks there was something about him that frightened me.
Maybe it was the vast emptiness in his icy eyes or the calculating smile
playing on his lips. I wasn’t sure, but I knew I needed to get out of there and
fast.
“How do you know my
name?”
I mustered up as much
bravado as I could, squared my shoulders and held his gaze as I demanded he
answer me. He let loose a chillingly mocking laugh.
“Oh this truly is
going to be fun. I haven’t had fun in
so long, Penelope. You want me to have fun don’t you?”
What was this guy
talking about? Not only was he a creep, but I got the feeling he was a little
on the crazy side. Not a good combination.
“No answer, Penny
dear? Oh poo, I so wanted to play with you a little while first.” He shrugged
and sat his drink down on the side table. “I guess it’s down to business then,
is it?”
Suddenly he lunged at
me, moving faster than should have been possible. His mouth spread in a wide
grin. That’s when I noticed his teeth, particularly his elongated canines. He
was an Other.
I screamed then saw nothing but light.

MMA Bad Boy Rico Choate falls for Avery, a deaf Marine – but will she stick around when she learns of his career in the octagon?

Rico Choate is a MMA bad boy with a love them and leave them attitude. That is until he meets Avery Walker, a deaf Marine who lost her hearing when her transport is destroyed in an I.E.D explosion in Afghanistan. He falls hard for her, even learning sign language from his friend, Chloe, so he can talk to her. However, Avery’s hatred for all celebrities forces Rico to keep his career in mixed martial arts a secret. How long can he keep such huge parts of his life separate? And if she does find out will she leave him or put her stubborn pride aside to stay with the man she loves?

Excerpt:
The next day didn’t fare much better for Rico. Another late shipment meant another afternoon arriving late at the gym. Fortunately, there was no class for him to teach. It was just a night to work out and answer questions, if need be. And it was the last day he needed to worry. By noon tomorrow, Max would be home and back at the helm of his own ship.
At the off ramp red light Rico noticed a text message. He clicked to open it.

Can you pick me up a cup of coffee on your way here?

Rico sighed. Now I’m Chloe’s delivery service? I didn’t agree to this. He quickly typed on the screen.

From where?

He waited for a response. As the light turned green, his phone chimed. He glanced at it before the traffic moved.

That cute coffee shop down the road. Thank you.

Rico sighed as he tossed his cell on the passenger seat. Driving past the gym with a growl, he didn’t stop until he reached the strip mall.
He stepped into the small shop with a gleaming smile. He glanced around. The dark stained shelves were lined with mugs, bags of coffee, and other trinkets. Another set of shelves was lined with books for patrons to read. Sofas and overstuffed recliners were scattered among the tables with mismatched chairs. Sitting on those chairs and sofas were lovely ladies already cooing at his presence. He laughed. I might just have to get a date or two before I leave.
Rico sauntered to the counter, where a tall, lanky redhead waited to take his order. After paying for a cup of coffee, he stepped back, winking at a girl sipping on a glass of iced tea. His eyes raked over her as she giggled. He grinned then glanced up behind the counter again.
He lost his breath. He felt his pulse pick up a notch. The last thing on earth he believed in was love at first sight. But in this moment, he was a true convert.
The barista barely came to his chest. Her long, blonde hair wisped in curls around her shoulders. Her frame was small, with perfect curves in all the right places. Her lips were a soft, very kissable pink. And when she looked up at him to hand him his drink, her eyes glittered a clear, crystal blue. She smiled then turned to fulfill the next order.
She never said one word to him. Him. Rico Choate. MMA superstar Rico Choate. His picture was on posters, in magazines.
And she didn’t say one word.
He was baffled. He gripped the coffee and rushed out the door. It wasn’t until he parked his Jeep at Hard Drive that he realized he hadn’t gotten one number, not from any of the women in the shop.
He rubbed his forehead, puzzled. He didn’t want any number. He just wanted the barista’s. But for the first time in his life, a woman wasn’t interested in him. He was still shaking his head when he strode into gym and plopped the paper cup down in front of an equally perplexed Chloe. Before she could even utter a syllable, he stormed out of her office and onto the mats.
Rico spent the rest of the afternoon working the speed and punching bags, hoping for a little bit of relief from his memory of the barista. He couldn’t get her out of his head. After a couple of hours, he couldn’t take it anymore. He jogged up the steps two at a time then ducked his head into the office.
“Need another cup of coffee?” he volunteered.
Chloe lifted up the empty cup. “I just finished this one. I’m—”
“Another cup coming right up.” Before Chloe could object, he was down the stairs and out the door. He hopped in the front seat of the Jeep, fired it on, and sped away. He brushed his fingers through his thick, brown hair as he waited at the lone stop light that separated Hard Drive from the coffee shop. He glanced at his reflection in the rearview mirror.
Then, he checked again. Yes, he looked incredible. The barista may have been able to blow him off before. She certainly wouldn’t miss him this time.
Rico stepped inside the cool, dimly lit store and glanced around. There were fewer people lounging than there were earlier. A couple of girls that had been there before waved in his direction. He ignored them as he approached the counter, frowning as he did so. The redhead greeted him with a goofy grin. “Need another jolt of java, bro?”
“Ummm…yeah.” Rico scanned behind the counter as he paid for the coffee. “Where’s the blonde who was here earlier?”
The redhead shot him a puzzled look. “Avery? You know her?”
“Not yet. But I’d like to.”
“Her shift is over. She’s heading to class. She just left to wait for the bus.” The barista handed him a paper cup. “Hey, aren’t you that MMA guy? I think I’ve seen you fight.”
“Yeah, probably.” Rico grabbed the drink and raced outside, never looking at the girls who now were vying for his attention. He searched up and down the sidewalk for the blonde barista. He picked up his pace again as his eyes landed on her standing at the corner, still dressed in her white blouse and khakis from the restaurant. A large, sky blue backpack nearly bursting at the seams was slung over her shoulder. She checked her watch as the bus crawled to a stop before her.
