Review – Caller of Light by TJ Shaw

Caller
Carina McKay is an outsider. With one parent of royal blood, she’s not nobility, yet not a servant either. The only comfort in her mundane existence is her love of Critons, the large fire-breathing creatures that protect the border of her homeland. But her destiny changes forever the day she catches the eye of King Marek Duncan.

Marek’s heart is closed to love. After an arranged marriage withers to a bitter end, he dedicates his energy to protecting his kingdom. Yet he’s searching for something more–the Caller of Light, the one who summons Critons.

Carina’s beauty and willfulness intrigue Marek, and he’s determined to have her. When his enemies try to come between them, he discovers just how much he will endure to protect her. Together, they can unlock a love that binds their souls, but only if they find the strength to follow their hearts

Cara’s Review
I started reading Caller of Light, and was immediately struck with familiarity. After some investigation, I realized I had already bought it, read it, and had it in my “like” pile. So, now, after rereading it (always a sign of a good book), I’ll do this book some justice and right a review!

I’m so glad I found and reread this book- it’s truly a great story. Write a Cinderella story with Critons (a dragon like creature) in the mix, and a great fantasy is born. Carina is a half royalty, but she and Marek, a neighboring King come to wed her half-sister, are drawn to one another. We get to see their journey of acceptance, doubt, love, and war. Your heart breaks for some of the injustices Carina has suffered, and continues to suffer throughout the book; but she is an incredibly strong and loving woman. Marek isn’t stupid, and though he acts impulsively on numerous occasions, he manages to get his head on straight and tries to get the heart of the issues at hand. Plus, there are dragons- doesn’t that almost automatically ensure a good book?

I really think readers who like fantasy romance will greatly enjoy this book. It will serve as a wonderful platform for further books, as Carina and Marek explore each other’s worlds and learn what their new bond means. So if you are in the mood for a Fantasy Cinderella book, with a strong heroine, Caller of Light is the book for you!
