Will his Christmas wish be granted?

A Saint’s Salvation

Corporal Nicholas ‘Saint’ Santiago needs to go home to reclaim the man he used to be. To be the man he was before Operation Enduring Freedom slowly hardened his heart. He needs to reconnect to the values and the reasons he is doing what he does. Saint also needs to try to forget the courageous woman he fell in love with.

Petty Officer Angelina Jones’ life changed the moment Saint saved her life. She survived the blast but now has to deal with the fact that she will never be whole. She can’t believe that anyone would want her the way she is now. Digging up her courage, Angelina moves forward hoping against hope that she can live a full life again.

Crossing paths again brings their emotions to a full boil. A coincidence that will have them both reaching for their dreams.

Excerpt:

Nick stretched. He’d arrived with a few hours to spare before he was supposed to meet his date for the evening. After such a long flight, Nick needed to move around, so he headed to the gym. It was state of the art, a far cry from the piece-meal gym equipment that the Marines had cobbled together in Afghanistan.

Nick was pumped from his work out, but now he stunk. Normal after such a workout, but thankfully he was stateside now, not in the desert where the water was rationed. There was no way Nick wasn’t showering before his upcoming evening. Even if he was spending the night alone, the hot shower was a luxury he wouldn’t pass up after the poor facilities in Afghanistan.

Nick headed in to shower. Stepping into the steaming water, he started to relax. Soaping up was done with efficiency, habit from the five minute showers anyone with the Department of the Navy had to take by necessity. Nick laughed as he rinsed. He really didn’t have to rush. He had time. Standing under the hot water, enjoying the warmth, he thought about the evening ahead and how he’d come to this point.

He was looking forward to it. Upon checking into the hotel Nick was told that everything was on the house, a tribute to his service. Arriving in his room, a message, along with a complementary bottle of champagne from his shrink greeted him. An anticipatory grin split his face as he read it. His date’s name was Angelina. The suite was luxurious, a fitting place for seduction.

Nick turned off the shower, his fingers pruney, and got out. He peered in the mirror, wiping a small section away and grimaced at his reflection. He needed to shave. Nick grabbed his kit, looked into it and froze. The scent wafting out of his kit brought back small memories, the sound of gunfire, always when least expected, the quiet of the streets before a bomb blast, the screams of the wounded. Nick hadn’t bothered shaving at Grandma’s house, and he had evidently grabbed his combat shaving kit without realizing it. He shook his head, shaking off the feelings that wanted to creep out. Shaking the kit over the trash, careful to keep his gear from falling out, he let the sand and dust fall, throwing away the bad memories with the sand. He could do this.

It took strength to admit your weaknesses. Doc’s courage made him reach for the help he needed, in spite of his reluctance in the beginning. Help that showed him how to conquer unexpected reminders like this.

Shaking his head, Nick gritted his teeth. Enough. Doc would never be his. Thinking about her would only taint his upcoming date. He took a deep breath and concentrated. Pushing away the sounds of battle that lingered in his mind, letting the memories go. Breathing in and out, Nick continued until his body relaxed and his hands stopped shaking.

Enough. He had new memories to make.

Straightening up, Nick finished his grooming. He wrapped the towel around his waist and headed to his closet to decide on a suit. It was easy enough, he’d only brought two sets of dress clothes. The hotel had pressed them for him while he’d been at the gym.

Checking the time, he noted there was still an hour before the date was supposed to start, no need to get all dressed up yet. Nick turned on the television, surfing channels to find something that caught his interest. Rudolph was on. Nick laughed. He felt a little like Rudolph, not quite fitted into the slot where he knew he belonged. Hopefully, like the red-nosed reindeer, he would find his perfect spot in the world. Donning his pants, Nick settled down to watch one of his favorite Christmas shows when his phone rang.

Love Me Forever

Tired of being in the baby sister zone, Abby is determined to make this wounded Marine realize that she is grown up and all woman.

Love Me Forever

Staff Sergeant Liam McGregor doesn’t know what hit him. Sent home to recuperate from an IED blast, Liam is stuck in a wheelchair and is sentenced to surgery and physical therapy before he can walk again.

A physical therapist, Abby Worth has loved Liam McGregor since she first noticed boys. It’s too bad he’s her brother’s best friend. She has always been firmly put in the baby sister zone no matter how hard she tried to catch his eye.

Liam sees Abby and when she goes home with him doesn’t know how he can keep his hands off of her. She’s now old enough to touch and the fire in his blood and the combination of pain killers make him lose control. Abby can’t help but take what she’s always wanted.

Together they have to overcome their fear of being left behind to grab what they have always wanted-each other.

Excerpt:

Liam heard a light footstep as his nostrils caught the scent of flowers. He ignored the sight and scent, keeping his head tilted back as he stared upward at nothing. It was probably another nurse. They came and went, their footsteps echoing down the corridor. Most didn’t smell as good as this one, though. She slowed as she spotted him and stopped in front of him. Liam couldn’t ignore the common courtesy that had been drilled into him since birth. He lowered his head and looked into familiar blue eyes.

“Liam?”

The gasp from her lips assured him that it was indeed Abby, little Abby Worth, all grown up. He had been best friends with her brother Hank since middle school when their family had settled down on the small spread they bought just outside of town. He stifled a groan as he ignored the familiar sensations she engendered in him since she first started filling out her bikini. He’d felt like a lecher at twenty-two when he first noticed her as more than his buddy’s little sister. Thank goodness he’d only been home on leave at the time.

“Baby girl? What are you doing here?”

“I was called for a job. I’m just here to get the information before heading out.” She looked at him, and he could see the worry in her eyes. She didn’t even call him on the nickname he knew she hated. “What happened to you, Liam? I never heard you were injured. I can’t believe Hank didn’t tell me.”

“I was in an IED blast. I’ve been in the hospital and now being sent home for recovery.” He shifted and couldn’t help the groan that escaped. He’d been an idiot to insist on sitting in the chair. His butt was numb and his bad leg, not that he really had a good one right now, throbbed with each beat of his heart. The unforgiving hard plastic just seemed to make it worse.

“Is that your wheel chair?” At his nod she gave him an exasperated look. “And I suppose you chose to sit on this poor excuse for a chair?” She shook her head at the rhetorical question. “Of course you did. Here, let me help you back into your wheel chair unless you can manage it yourself.”

“No.” Liam sighed. “I can’t. I could just wait for my dad to help me. I’m not sure you’d be able to lift me.”

He raised an eyebrow at her snort. She was busy checking his chair and locking the wheels. She was obviously familiar with the operation.

“I’m a physical therapist. Believe me, I’m stronger than I look.” Abby helped him up and into his chair, and Liam had a sinking feeling in his gut.

“What job did you say you were here for?” Liam hoped he was wrong. The thought of her hands on him made more than his head throb. He had no idea how he could hide his reaction to her if she was the one being assigned to the ranch.

“Don’t know yet. I had a message on my answering machine that I was needed. I came on down to check it out. Why?”

“No reason. Just curious I guess.” He settled back into his wheel chair with a sigh. Abby arranged his legs on the foot rest.

“How is this?”

She was all business as she checked his comfort level.

“Good.” Liam smiled at her. “Thank you, Abby.” She stood up and the scent of flowers that he had first noticed tightened his groin. At least that part of his body was working despite the fact that he didn’t want it to react around Abby. Not that it had ever listened to him around her. Her age and the strength of his reaction to her was another reason he was glad he had enlisted in the Marines. If it was one sided, that would have been different, but he could see her response to him even if she didn’t know what it was. Liam had to protect her even if it was from himself. If he had been living at home, Liam was afraid of what could have happened.

“You’re welcome, Liam. If you need anything just call. My parents can always reach me.”

She leaned over and gave him a short hug. He couldn’t help but notice the softness of her arms and breasts as they pressed against him. She quickly stood and turned away. He swore he saw a light blush stain her cheeks as she waved and quickly stepped down the corridor. He swallowed. The feel of her against him had sent his temperature soaring. He was glad she left so quickly. The tenting of his sweatpants made it obvious what her touch did to him. He was damn glad she was oblivious.

* * * *

Abby escaped down the corridor, her footsteps squeaking on the faded tiles. The admin offices were in the oldest section of the building. Harsh lighting and faded posters lined the walls. The money went to updated equipment to help the soldiers that were wounded, not sprucing up the offices that housed the tons of paperwork the VA required.

Abby never expected to see Liam here. She’d had a crush on him since she first started noticing boys. Her body started developing and her hormones went haywire. He’d been the one she’d compared all her boyfriends to, and they’d come up lacking. From the electricity that seemed to spark when she touched him, she knew she wasn’t over him. It was obvious to her he didn’t feel the same way. He never had. His nickname for her, baby girl, said it all.

Abby entered the office, glad she had put on a bra today. Her nipples throbbed from the feel of Liam’s chest when she hugged him. The air blasting in the office made it even worse. The scheduler for the department was going through menopause and threatened to kill anyone that changed the thermostat. No one was willing to test her. A former Marine, Peg was still intimidating.

“Hey, Peg. What assignment do you have for me?”

“Abby.” She smiled, waving her to a chair. “A Marine. He’s still enlisted but needs therapy. He broke an arm and both legs and is still recovering from being thrown from an explosion. Had to have surgery on one leg and his arm. He’s being allowed to do therapy at home as long as we can find a live in therapist. You know we’re full up right now. We have been since this damn war started. He’s well enough to go home, but not fit enough to return to active duty. The board decided to have the outreach program fill the gap.”

Abby nodded. The hospital and the foster care center always seemed to be full. Different faces, but always full of injured soldiers, sailors, air men and Marines.

“Makes sense. Is he too far from the center to do therapy from here?”

“Yes and no. There’s really no one to bring him in daily, and he needs daily therapy. He lives far enough out that taking someone from the ranch would be a hardship for them. Not to mention the bouncing around on the roads would just undo all the good from each session. So, a live in is recommended for now until he improves.”

“I had wondered. How is his attitude toward therapy?”

“He’s on board with it. He wants to get better. It’s just not fast enough, so don’t let him rush it. I guarantee that he’ll try.” Peg laughed. “He’s a typical Marine.”

Abby got a sinking feeling in her stomach. She had a feeling she knew exactly who she would be working with.

“What is his name?”

“McGregor.”

Abby closed her eyes briefly and sighed.

“Liam.” She swallowed. “When do I start?”

“I’ve never seen you at a party before. I thought you were a good little girl.” His teasing voice sent thrills throughout her body.

“Today’s my birthday.” Isabelle snuggled closer to him. His body seemed to surround hers.

“So, does that make you legal today?”

Isabelle nodded vigorously then groaned. Her head swam from the movement. Maybe, just maybe she’d had a bit much to drink. Lee would take care of her though. He’d promised.

“But not legal for drinking yet.”

Isabelle pouted then sniffed.

“So what? Most of the people here aren’t twenty-one.”

“Doesn’t make it right.”

Isabelle craned her head around to look at him. Surprised at the hard note in his voice.

“But you’ve been drinking since you were in high school.”

“Again, doesn’t make it right. So, you decided to cut loose now that you’re an adult?”

The small smirk at the side of his mouth fascinated her. Somehow the tip of her finger made its way there. His lips were strong but soft, warm against the softness of her finger. The scruff around his mouth prickled her finger as he rubbed his face against it.

“Don’t play with fire, little girl.” He nipped the tip of her finger as he winked at her, sending a zing through her body.

Isabelle giggled. Normally she thought herself out of Lee’s league, but tonight that didn’t bother her in the least. She’d had too many jello shots to care. Snuggled in his arms, his hands on her affected her more than any bit of alcohol could. Combining them gave her a warm glow.

Isabelle wiggled, the trail of his fingertips tickling her neck and circling her ear. She could feel her nipples tightening, glad for her push up bra. It made her boobs look fabulous, but was thick enough to hide her body’s reaction.

Lee chuckled in her ear, sending warmth pooling low in her belly. Isabelle caught her breath as he trailed his finger down her breast unerringly circling her nipple.

“Cat got your tongue, little girl?”

Excerpt:

Nick received the Dear John letter a couple of months into his deployment. Worn out, tired and miserable in the conditions there, he’d looked forward to her letters. She was tired of a boyfriend on the other side of the world and wanted someone to go to the movies with, arms to hold her at night. She didn’t want to hear of war and death. She wanted someone to lean on, someone there. Nick felt as if she had broken his soul.

His buddies called him Saint. Nick wasn’t by any means. He swore and drank and smoked. The guys called him Saint because no matter what else he did, Nick was always faithful to her. Not that it mattered any more. She had just been the final tear in the cloth of his soul. The emptiness inside him was frightening.

Leila had never been one to carry the light. The crevices of her mind were dark, her eyes holding an ancient, unhappy soul. They were drawn together like a moth to a flame. At times, she couldn’t even bear to be around him, his joy more than she could sometimes stand. High school sweethearts, they epitomized the ideal that opposites attract.

Perhaps she had seen the darkness now inside him, the absence of the joy that drew her. The combination of him and her, looked at in that light, was frightening in the extreme. She must have dreaded it. For self-preservation, if nothing else, she had to let him go.

A shout from Hamilton brought him back to the here and now. “Hey, Saint, do you see any trouble coming?” On guard at the west wall, Nick shook his head. Not that it was much of a wall, a couple of sandbags holding up a makeshift bullet riddled wooden fence, an illusion of safety and security.

“No, it all looks clear.” Well, as clear as normal, Nick thought. The Seabees and the Army Corp of Engineers had done their best to give them a clear line of site, but the rubble of buildings and piles of rock where there used to be a town never seemed to go away. Rebels constantly hid there, randomly firing at their FOB, a forward operating base in Helmand Provence, making it almost impossible to build a more secure perimeter.

Nick could see kids playing in the dirt. In the distance the locals were harvesting the poppy fields. Some of the largest poppy fields in the world were right outside the walls of the FOB. Beautiful when in bloom, they were more pervasive and did more damage than the terrorists.

“Anymore threats?”

“When aren’t there threats?” Every damn day there were threats. “Why, is there a problem?”

“The brass is making noise. When they do something stupid, we end up paying for it.” Hamilton sounded disgusted. As Hamilton spoke, shots were fired over and through the fence, adding more holes to the dilapidated barrier. Nick and Hamilton hit the ground, rolling toward the sandbags to return fire through the cracks. “See what I mean?”

“Yeah it’s been a while since they shot at us, at least a couple of days.” Nick’s sarcasm caused Hamilton to laugh.

“Probably someone is coming to pick up something from the poppy fields and they want to keep us from seeing who.” Hamilton glanced at him. “You doing okay?”

“Gettin’ there. It was just a shock, ya know?”

“Yeah, damn women. The least they could do is be faithful while we’re out here fighting.”

“Yeah, it sucks. I just can’t help thinking it’s my fault.”

“Fuck. How the hell could it be? You weren’t even there. The bitch knew you were gone, were going to be gone.” They fired shots, aiming at the muzzle flash in the distance. More Marines headed their way, sprinting from cover to cover. Perez came running, bringing out ammo and providing more fire power.

Another crack and Perez went down with a cry.

“Fuck! Medic! Man down!” The cry went out, passed through until the call went to the corpsman, while Nick tried to stem the blood flow. Hands pushed his away. Nick looked up. Petty Officer Jones, better known as Doc, had bandages ready.

“Help me roll this on until we can get him out of here.” Her voice sent a ripple through him. Nick had always ignored the attraction he had felt for her. He’d had his girl back home, and fraternization out here could get him thrown in the brig. Not to mention the brig out here was a hell hole.

Nick was leery about approaching Doc now. The Dear John letter had been a shock. He had known Leila for years. Hell, they had been friends since they were little. Her betrayal was unexpected. Nick didn’t even really know Doc. He could trust her with his life, but he wasn’t ready for another go around with his heart, no matter the attraction he felt.

Nick looked toward the fence line, rifle at the ready. Shots were firing sporadically around him. That’s when he saw it, the trail from a grenade launcher, unmistakable. Shit!
