EXCERPT (Warning: Adult Language)

Ricky and I met in third grade. I was a skinny nerd with a sharp wit, who lacked the weight to back up my big talk and keep the bigger boys off me. Ricky had been held back in kindergarten, burdened by an inability to grasp things in a reasonable amount of time. No one was foolish enough to tease him about it, because he was a year older and a head taller than the rest of us. He was but nine, but already had man-sized hands and he loved to fight.

I remember once when we were in junior high, I made a crack about his large hands in front of a group of girls, “Man, if you ever jerk off, I feel sorry for your dick.”

He didn’t hit me or anything, but the way he glared at me while snapping off a quick, “Fuck you,” let me know not to do anything like that again.

His lack of smarts and my being a bookworm was a case of opposite’s becoming homies. In later years, I would joke that “Ricky and I were Don King and Ali before King and Ali,” because I set the stage for many of his battles. I’d lambaste a tougher classmate and as soon as he was ready to duke it out, Ricky would step in. Some of the boys were foolish enough to take him on. Ricky relished such opportunities.

In short, education meant about as much to him as a checking account does to a duck. He was content with being the undisputed “King of the School.” That moniker would follow him through twelfth grade.
Ricky had a sister who was two years younger. Her name was Antonia Gayle. While she did not have her mother’s good looks, she was by no means what guys in our clique would call a “mud duck.” During her Junior year of high school, she didn’t have much of a body. Her chest was flat and she had slack in the back of her slacks.

I once told her, “You’re so skinny, I could sharpen a knife on the bones in your ass.”

The crowd within earshot thought the same way as I, that it was one of my more memorable one-liners. That was the first of two times I ever made her cry.

Afterward, we met in private and I slipped my arm over her shoulder. I hardly remember how it happened, but that was the day I gave her the first sample of tongue to the mouth. Imagine, a girl about to go to the twelfth grade, who’d never been kissed. Again, I don’t want to sound boastful, but Antonia always had a bit of a crush on me, and that single kiss changed things between us.
By the end of summer, however, she made like a cherry tree and blossomed. The fact that she’d gone from an A cup to a C had the gears in my mind in full whirl. I knew there was but six weeks before she turned eighteen, and I planned to be the first one to introduce her to the correlation between her nipples and clit.

Three days after she turned eighteen, and with Ricky playing in a football game a few towns away, she gave up the tootchie-pap. Unbeknownst to she and Ricky, this took place but a few weeks after her mother and I shared the same type of joy.
