Paloma Beck- Interview- NewRelease – Vanished Pride

palomabeck

Beverly and Tamara: Welcome to SSLY. Thanks so much for joining us today. So first why don’t you tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a closeted erotic romance author, a carpooling PTA mom who writes erotic romance while her kids are at school. And I wouldn’t change a thing! I write full-time, and I love my job and my life. Every day, I get to bring out both sides of myself so they each get their chance to come out and play. It’s almost naughty but too much fun to worry about.

Tamara: What do you HAVE to have when you are writing?

Espresso or (really strong, dark) Coffee. I make a latte for myself every morning when I get home from dropping the boys off at school. And a scarf… I have a soft scarf a friend’s daughter knitted for me and I’ve developed this dependency to it when I’m writing, especially a first draft.

Beverly: When did you start to write?

I began writing seriously in high school. I took a creative writing course with a professor who taught me to channel all that teenage angst into my writing. I wrote for the high school magazine but then I took a side trip when I went to college. I decided I needed a degree in something that would make money. It wasn’t until I married, had children and decided to stay home with them that I picked up my writing again. That’s when I really felt the absence of my writing life.

Tamara: What do you think are the qualities that make up a “hero”?

The hero and his qualities are highly dependent on the heroine. Just like we aren’t attracted to the same men, heroines aren’t attracted to the same hero “type”. I write from a character-driven focus so I count on her to tell me what she needs in her man. But… I do have a tendency to write them like I like them… dark, bold and dominant. (hmm. I think I just described how I like my coffee too!)

Beverly: Can you describe your favorite character? And which of your books is he/she in? How do you come up with your characters?

Donovan is my favorite hero. He’s in my latest book “Vanished Pride” and I have been waiting to write about him since I began the series four books ago. He exudes sexual prowess and comes from a long lineage of men who take their women in hand. *cough * cough * blush* That means they believe in Domestic Discipline, a relationship wherein the man is seen as the head of the household.
Mostly, I adore how his sensitive side is so strong despite how truly dominant he is. And he needed to be dominant because his mate’s soul sin is pride, the most challenging of the deadly sins, and his fate is to eliminate the sin from her. That was no easy task.
Allowing my characters to come to me makes developing strong characters one of the easiest parts of my writing. Then as I develop the character, the scenes fall into place.

Tamara: What are the hardest scenes for you to write? Suspense? Sex? Dialogue? And why?

Action scenes are difficult for me. In the Seven Sin Sisters series, the men are part of a covert government agency to track down and eliminate terrorists. Each book contains a few scenes of the men on missions. They took a lot of research to get them to be as accurately portrayed as possible. It’s difficult since I’ve never experienced it – this part of the book, I write solely from a research perspective. That’s the challenge.

Beverly: What writer, if any, influenced how you write?

I’ve read a lot –books and blogs- and I can’t put my finger on one particular author. I write what I like to read. As a reader, I want romance, some suspense with an obstacle to overcome and in the end, a HEA or HFN. I also enjoy authors who rely heavily on the emotional component to the story… those are the authors I feel like I learned the most from.

Tamara: Who would you choose as your “book boyfriend”? From what book? Author?

Easy… Dragos Cuelebre from Thea Harrison’s Dragon Bound, the Elder Races series. He’s a dragon and totally alpha male. Then he falls head over heels for Pia. Oh, to be Pia! If you haven’t yet, listen to this book on audio and you’ll fall in love too.

Tamara:”A dragon just gave me a piece of jewelry,” she said. She took another swig and handed the bottle back to Graydon. “Have I been added to his hoard?”

He shook his head and drank too. “No, cupcake,” he said. “I’m pretty sure you’ve replaced it.” Love Dragon Bound!

Beverly: What is the kinkiest thing you’ve ever done? Or would like to? What? We are all about the love!

Read Vanished Pride. It’ll more than answer this question. 😉

Beverly: *paging threw the book*

Tamara: Bev! What are your favorite types of heroines? Do you like the damsel in distress who needs saving or the kick-ass variety? Why?

I know it’s not politically correct but… I love the damsel in distress heroine. I want her to need –really, deeply need- her hero. She can’t be a push over but it needs to be obvious that he’s the leader in the relationship.

Tamara: If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want to have with you? (you have food, water, shelter, all the necessities, so nothing mundane)

Nexus Tablet (that’s where all my books are)
My Husband… does he count as a thing?
Espresso Machine

Beverly: What is your “guilty pleasure”?

Reading in the bubble bath every Sunday night. It’s decadent. Everyone knows not to disturb me. I light candles, use lavender bath salts, and make it as hot as I can stand. Then I soak and read until the water gets too cool.

Tamara: What dream or goal have you yet to realize?

My long-term goal is to move to house on a lake. It’ll happen someday… and then I’ll be a reclusive romance author.

Beverly: What was your most embarrassing moment? It can’t be worse than mine… getting caught naked in the back of an orange Gremlin by the police! (I am such a naughty girl)

Wow! Yours is so much better than anything I can remember about myself. I did once get caught in a parked car with a guy but luckily my head was in his lap 😉 so they couldn’t see who I was.

Tamara: If you were a color what would you be and why?

White. I prefer to fade into the background. I’m an introvert which is why writing suits me. I just registered for my first conference as an author –RomFest 2013- which isn’t until June but I’m already worrying about meeting new people. Yep, white definitely so nothing stands out about me for people to stare at.

Beverly: Who has influenced how you perceive love? Why?

Three men shaped my perception of love. The first two nearly ruined the idea for me… my father and my high school boyfriend. Thank God for my older brother who put me firmly in the right direction. He taught me when a man loves me, he’ll value me and treat me like I’m precious. He taught me not to settle for less than that.

Tamara and Beverly: Okay. We are SSLY so I have to ask. Who loves you?

My husband, my sons, my sisters, my nieces, some of my friends (remember I said I was an introvert so I don’t let too many people close) and maybe a few others care enough to believe they love me… that’s a deep thought. I feel like I might be back in Philosophy 101… lol.

Now for some quick fun questions:

Boxers or briefs? Boxer briefs – are they not the sexiest invention ever??

Coffee or Tea? Coffee

Tall, dark and handsome or Blond and buff? Italian men all the way – tall, dark and handsome

Hairy chest or smooth? Hairy

Chocolate or Vanilla? Vanilla, in ice cream only

Kinky or Sweet? Kinky

Fast or slow? Slow

Public or private? Private

Top or bottom? Bottom
