A new race, destined to save or destroy Earth’s population; a population made up of not just humans, but vampires, demons, werewolves, and fairies. A new race that has begun with one of five sisters, Jenna; the sisters had been swept into the foster system after the death of their mother. This novel is a promising start to a series, focused on the battle between a coalition of paranormal races against the Malums- paranorms that believe that they should rule over humans.
So who new demons could be good guys? What a great twist- Sheppard portrays them similar to berserkers, who lose control during battle- but with an ounce of self-awareness and the ability to pull themselves back to their non-demon form. There were definitely some delicious twists and turns, and a HAE to end all HAE. Lucas is deliciously alpha, and Jenna is kick-butt heroine. She dives into the world of paranorms head first, quickly trying to assimilate, and exploring her own powers- even learning to fight. Yeah for a being proactive! Add in some angst present in most paranormal relationships, and the end result is a fantastic new novel.
I really enjoyed this book, and can’t wait for the next book in the series, which I’m assuming will be Jocelyn’s story. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who loves urban fantasy!
